Gas Tank Explosions - Crown Victoria Police Car Explosions
Ford's Crown Victoria, a favorite of law enforcement agencies and civilians alike, has a major design flaw that puts many people at risk. There is a problem with the placement of the gas tank in Ford's "Panther" line of cars, which includes the Ford Crown Victoria, the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Lincoln Town Car, and most police cruisers. The Ford Crown Victoria has not been redesigned since 1979 and the outdated model poses a threat to anyone who comes into contact with it. In this particular model, the gas tank is placed between the rear axle and the rear bumper. Studies done since the design of the car show that this is not the proper placement; instead, the gas tank should be in front of the axle. In addition, there is a sharp bolt in the rear axle that can puncture the gas tank in a high-speed collision. Ford Crown Victorias are the choice model of police cruiser for law enforcement agencies across the country. Ford boasts that the Crown Victoria holds 85% of the police cruiser market. This hold over the market has angered some in law enforcement because of the danger for an auto fire in a rear end collision with the Crown Victoria model.

P: In a continuing effort to reduce the risk of fires and explosions caused by rear-end collisions, the Ford Motor Company offers a fire-suppression technology on the Crown Victoria. Dallas officials accuse Ford of developing technology that would protect the Crown Victorias gas tank from rupture, but not making it available at prices police agencies can afford. These include self-sealing fuel tanks, and trunk kits that keep heavy objects in place during an accident. Crash test results in Dallas show the Crown Victoria to be unsafe even when equipped with the trunk packs. A videotape of a 75-mph crash shows the kit splitting the cars tank. Ford officials accuse the city of loading gear in such a way as to ensure failure.

Since then, 11 law enforcement officers around the country have burned to death when the fuel tanks on their Crown Victorias exploded, bringing the total since 1983 to 15. Several others have survived but were seriously injured. That might not seem like many considering there are about 400,000 Crown Victoria Police Interceptors the official name of the souped-up cars sold to law enforcement - in use, and that police vehicles are more likely to be rammed from behind at high speeds.

Well, you are wrong there. The Marauder may be a rebadged version of very similar sheet metal, (along with other differences) it is marketed as the Mercury Marauder, not the Ford Crown Victoria Marauder. You are right about the Buick, though. The Buick Regal Grand National was a trim level, not to be confused with the Buick Turbo Regal trim level. And in 1986 the LeSabre also had a Grand National trim level. Those are extremely rare though, as only 117 were built. That qualified the body style to compete in NASCAR that year.
