1996 Ford Crown Victoria - Overview
The 1996 Crown Victoria is available in two model editions: (Base) Crown Victoria and LX. For 1996 the Crown Victoria features revised variable assist power steering, a redesigned steering wheel with center-mounted horn, dual air bags and a single key entry system. Other standard items include woodgrain-trimmed instrument panel and solar tinted glass. Options include cruise control, an illuminated entry system, power door locks and remote decklid release. A handling and performance package (including touring tires and rear air suspension) is also available, as are anti-lock brakes with traction control.

The Crown Victoria platform dates back to 1978, when it was downsized. Still, a total of 78,541 of the full-sized models were sold in the past year, compared with 79,716 in 2002 and 95,261 in 01. A restyling is scheduled for the fall of 2005.

Before the gas crisis of the 70s, most cars were big, heavy and had rear-wheel drive (meaning the power driving the car came from the rear wheels). When the cost of fuel skyrocketed, automakers began making smaller, lighter cars that wouldn't use so much gas, but they couldn't go very well in snow or on other slippery surfaces. So engineers put the power to the front wheels, under the heavy engine, on many of these small cars so that they could maneuver in bad road conditions. Customers liked the front-wheel drive qualities so much that automakers began to make all their cars with the front engine, front drive configuration. Just a few rear-wheel drive cars can be found in today's new car marketplace, and most of them are large cars. On the list below, only the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Gran Marquis, Lincoln Town Car and Mercedes-Benz S-class cars have rear-wheel drive.
