There were some problems with early 2003 Police Interceptor. The newly designed steel wheels would rust and fall out, the rack and pinion units would fail early (sub-10k miles), and the rear axles would wear out and possibly fall out as well. This was not limited to the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Some 2003 Mercury Marauders were also affected.

CarsEverything - 2000 Ford Crown Victoria LX Review -
For those of you too young to remember, the Ford Crown Victoria was a model offered in the mid-1950s that was a special 2-door sport coupe version of their venerable bread and butter Fairlane model. The name conjured immediate images of a targa-bar like chrome roof hoop separating the metal back of the roof from the transparent green glass over the front passengers. It was, the premier model in the Ford line. The name was resurrected when the Galaxie nameplate, another name out of the past, had outlived its usefulness and image. To those codgers that remember the old Crown Vic, this version will conjure up no images of its progenitor. Not a coupe, but a 4-door sedan; not sporty, but passenger-oriented and old-fashioned big; and not sleek, but large and elegant.

Ford - Crown Victoria The last bastion of the traditional full-size American car carries over into the 2006 model year with only minimal changes. The big rear-drive Crown Vic retains all the virtues that have made it a stalwart in the taxi and law-enforcement communities: rear-wheel drive; V8 power; and plenty of front- and rear-seat room.
