Show cars had long used transparent roof sections to display their interior s and give the cars a light, airy feel, but few cars made it into production with such novelties. The Crown Victoria was different though, and used a similar Plexiglas section to the 1954 Ford Skyliner. It was a great idea for making the car feel less claustrophobic, but buyers were never really convinced enough and they preferred the safer option of the regular hardtop coupe. The underpinnings used a perimeter chassis with conventional suspension, consisting of double wishbones up front and leaf springs at the rear, all dampened by telescopic shock absorbers, thus making the ride very smooth. The engine was powerful, coming straight from the Thunderbird and giving plenty of straight line power low down in the rev range.

Mr. Chairman and members of the Committee, thank you for the opportunity to testify on the crash fire safety of the Ford Crown Victoria. The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) is a consumer group founded by Consumers Union and Ralph Nader in 1970 to advocate for safe, efficient and reliable motor vehicles. The fundamental principle of fuel system integrity expressed by CAS over the years is at the heart of the tragedy of the Ford Crown Victoria fire deaths if occupants survive the trauma of a crash, they should not die by fire. Although Ford has tried to mislead the public into believing the fire crashes in Crown Victorias are unsurvivable due to high speed, they are generally survivable because the Crown Victoria has so much crush space and strong seats to absorb the energy of the crash. By placing the fuel tank in the energy absorbing crush zone, Ford converts a survivable 80 mph trauma crash into a fatal fire crash. Last 4th of July, Cobb County GA Officer Greg Abbott's 1998 Crown Victoria was rear ended by a 18-wheel truck. The crash jammed the doors and set off a fire ball. Shielded momentarily from the flames by a Plexiglass security screen, Officer Abbott miraculously escaped without a scratch by climbing out the broken passenger window. New York Trooper Robert Ambrose and Arizona Officers Cruz, Fink and Neilson were not so fortunate and died from burn injuries or smoke inhalation.

During the late 1970's, 80's and 90's, several different light bar styles were used including the Jet-sonic and Jet-Stream which used alternating red and white rotating lights. In the early 90's, blue lights were also added to the light bars. In 1998 the department adopted the Federal Vista, which includes intersection clearing lights and strobe lights in addition to rotating halogen lamps. Several of the marked vehicles assigned to the Traffic Unit do not have roof mounted lightbars but are equipped with strobe lights in the front windshield and rear window area.

The first "Crown Victoria" appeared in 1955; it was a 2-door 6-seater hardtop coupe, part of the Ford Fairlane range, that differed from the regular Victoria model (named after a type of carriage) by having a lower, sleeker roofline and much more stainless steel trim, including a stainless steel band that 'crowned' the roofline, passing right over the car, as an extension of the B-pillar line. In 1980, Ford brought back the name on a deluxe version of the LTD full-size car line on the Ford Panther platform. It replaced the previous year's LTD Landau model, and other than the name, it was essentially the same. It was recognizable by its four headlights with amber turn signals beneath them (base LTDs had two headlights, and clear turn signals in the grille). There was a 2-door coupe (all steel top this time), 4 door sedan and a wagon- the wagon became a "LTD Country Squire" if fake-wood trim was ordered. It is interesting to mention the contents of the recall kit because they can be found on early 1980s Fords. Ford used polymer shields on the gas tank facing the rear differential covers. Ford also used polymer shock bolt covers for the lower mounts on the rear shocks.
