A fiery collision took the life of a Chandler police officer June 12, 2002, heightening concern about the safety of a police cruiser used throughout the Valley. Officer Robert Nielsen, 25, was responding to an injury accident call when his Ford Crown Victoria was struck on Chandler Boulevard.

Reports have identified a big car plant in Wixom, Mich. Its biggest products are parts for the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis, which are assembled in nearby St. Thomas, Ont. In late November, the Federal Traffic Safety Agency did an about face and opened a low-level inquiry to look at not only Ford's police car, but also its regular models with the same chassis and gas tank location, the Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Towne Car, and Crown Victoria Sedan. CISCHKE: When you look at an average Crown Victoria owner, they might be pulled over to the side of the road maybe one time in the three-year period when they own their vehicle, where the police, the normal traffic police officer will make 30 to 50 stops per day.

September 23- Even before Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, federal investigators were auditing Louisiana's emergency preparedness agency for losing $60 million in federal funds. Much of the money was siphoned from the state's share of Hazard Mitigation Grants, a federal program intended to help states retrofit property and improve flood control facilities. Although most of the money has yet to be accounted for, some questionable expenses include several thousand dollars to send the agency's deputy director first-class to Germany and the purchase of a Ford Crown Victoria.

A customer has complained that the brake pedal is low in his 2001 Ford Crown Victoria but Technician A has tried the brakes and found the car stops normally, with the pedal at a normal height, during his test drive. He plans to ask the customer to demonstrate the problem. Technician B, on the other hand, theorizes the customer may be using the wrong words to describe the problem and suggests holding light pressure on the pedal with the car stationary, to see if the pedal drops from the height where it initially stops.

Last fall, Ford issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to dealers stating that, upon request, they were to make two minor modifications to Crown Victoria police interceptors to lessen the chance of fuel tank punctures. These modifications involve replacing the parking brake bolt and grinding off the tab stabilizer bar bracket.
