Crown Victoria Safety Alert - LATEST NEWS/ARCHIVES
The fiery death of a Prairie View police officer has put the spotlight back on America's most popular police car. Approximately 75 percent of the nation's officers drive a Ford Crown Victoria, a car critics claim explodes too easily when hit from behind. That's exactly what happened Sunday morning to Prairie View officer Jerome Sobieski. Associated Press A Prairie View police officer was killed when a pickup slammed into the rear of his police cruiser. Officer Jerome Sobieski died inside his patrol car after the impact caused his 1999 Ford Crown Victoria to erupt in flames early Sunday. A police officer was hospitalized with second-degree burns on Friday after his patrol car exploded when it was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver. Officer Michael Moses, 30, had just pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 30 when his Ford Crown Victoria patrol car was struck from behind. He was listed in serious but stable condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on Friday afternoon.
Yoostabees: Police Cars - The Car Connection
Once Chrysler got out of its big rear-wheel-drive V-8 sedans in the early Eighties, Mopar-oriented PDs had to settle for the mid-sized Dodge Diplomat or Plymouth Gran Fury, which because they were lower-priced than the full-sized Chevy Caprice or Ford Crown Vic, did well in the police market.

Still, even these modifications are minor when compared to the bulk of the proven engineering Ford gained with the P2, like load paths that connect and stretch throughout the vehicle to dissipate crash forces; a rigid system of steel rings that surround and protect the passenger cabin, and the SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) tube that helps absorb side impacts. But the piece of technology that makes this platform-sharing strategy work out so well is the electro-hydraulic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system engineered by Volvo and its supplier Haldex that uses an electronically controlled limited-slip coupling to transfer torque to the rear wheels. Ford executives say that the company has long wanted a sedan with AWD, (which they see as a key market differentiator) but found that modifying the Taurus or Crown Victoria would be too costly.

The NAPA system also facilitates warranty recovery. The Chicago PD fleet mainly operates Ford Crown Victoria patrol units. NAPA works closely with Ford to guarantee that the in-house warranty labor and parts are properly reimbursed to the city. During 2004, the city realized about $600,000 in warranty reimbursement related to the police fleet.

A statement posted on Ford's Fleet Web site states: "All of the accidents Ford knows of involving Crown Victoria Police Interceptors and fires have occurred in very high-energy impacts, some being struck at high speeds by large vehicles and others at speeds up to 100 mph. For comparison sake, a Crown Victoria dropped from an eight-story building would be traveling 50 mph when it hit the ground.
