Ford Motor Company has released the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid SUV. Toyota and Ford entered into a licensing agreement in March 2004 allowing Ford to use 20 patents from Toyota related to hybrid technology, although Ford's engine was independently designed and built.

The Ford Escape Hybrid will feature an electric drivetrain to augment its fuel-efficient, 4-cylinder gasoline engine. With regenerative braking and nearly instantaneous startstop capability, the Escape Hybrid will be especially fuel-efficient in city traffic. The Escape Hybrid will deliver acceleration performance similar to an Escape equipped with a V-6 internal combustion engine. The Escape Hybrid will have a driving range of more than 500 miles on a single tank of gasoline.

Hybrid powertrains, available in sedans and small cars for the past several years, will soon be widely available in SUVs. Ford was the first to introduce such a vehicle to the market, the Ford Escape Hybrid, but others are close behind. Choices will include the Saturn VUE with BAS (Belt Alternator Starter Hybrid System), Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h, a hybrid Mazda Tribute and undoubtedly others. While hybrid alternatives offer a substantial jump in fuel economy, they also require a commensurate jump in price to cover the expense of developing this new technology.

A Ford Escape hybrid was delivered in late February.. The Public Works Department will be adding some graphics to the exterior to highlight that the vehicle is a hybrid. It will then be put in service in the Building Inspections Division. The City Council, on recommendation of the Environmental Education Commission, authorized purchase of the hybrid for 2005. The vehicle costs more initially, but the savings in fuel are expected to offset the higher purchase price. The hybrid not only conserves fuel, but also has lower emissions.
