cars.com New SUVs Buying Guide
Ford Escape Hybrid: No SUV closely compares to the Escape Hybrid in terms of fuel economy. The two-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid earns an estimate by the Environmental Protection Agency of 36 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway. While developing this SUV, Ford promised it would deliver performance comparable to a V-6-powered Escape but with the economy of a four-cylinder model. In fact, it does better.
2005 Ford Escape Hybrid
The Escape Hybrid looks like the traditional Escape, the best-selling compact sport utility, with a few key differences. The Escape Hybrid features unique badging that uses the Ford road-and-leaf insignia, with standard 16-inch wheels and a discreet air vent in the driver's side rear quarter window. Escape Hybrid is available with a special Appearance Package that features silver body-side cladding and bright trim.
Clean Car Campaign
At last week's New York Auto Show, auto companies premiered several new hybrid-electric vehicles, adding to the mix of clean, fuel-efficient vehicles that will soon be available in dealer showrooms. Ford finally premiered its Escape Hybrid SUV, available to consumers next summer, and provided a glimpse of a future mid-sized hybrid sedan - the Futura - that will go on sale in 2005. Ford Escape Hybrid and Futura sedan: Ford's Escape Hybrid made its debut in New York this past week, to be released to dealer showrooms in the summer of 2004. While a little later than planned, select fleet customers may get early production models late this year to provide for real world testing before release to the consumer market.

Feature Article - Hybrid Hullabaloo - 07/04
Because beyond the tortured logic and schoolyard bragging rights it's apparent that being first or third out of the gate isn't as important as being in the race. And the Escape Hybrid is very much in the race, even if its specifications seem familiar. Ford has packaged a 70-kW (approximately 94-hp) permanent-magnet electric traction motor, 133-hp gasoline engine and CVT in almost the same space as the conventional four-cylinder drivetrain. The Escape Hybrid can draw on the instant torque of the motor to get things rolling; the vehicle runs only on the electric motor during part-throttle acceleration up to speeds of 25 mph.
Howstuffworks "Nice Rides"
What's so unique about the latest hybrid car on the market? For starters, it's an SUV. What's more, you'd never know it's a hybrid: The eco-friendly Ford Escape features almost the exact same exterior, passenger room and cargo space as the non-hybrid model.
2006 Ford Escape Review - ForbesAutos.com
As for how the Escape Hybrid actually goes, the answer is quite nicely - if not exactly quickly. Sidle behind the wheel and, other thana small gauge that indicates the boost from the electric motor, the interior looks just like that of a typical car - not like some sort of space pod. Turn the key and both the electric and gas engines fire up, but unless the gas motor is needed, you can pull out into traffic under full electric power. More on the driving experience in a moment; first, though, it's worth noting that the Escape Hybrid has plenty of room inside, with as much front- and second-row headroom as the Highlander Hybrid - and nearly the same legroom and shoulder room. It's a little skimpy on cargo space when compared with the Toyota, which also gets a third row of seats and is a larger vehicle in general. But the Ford is $6,000 cheaper and gets better mileage in both the city and on the interstate. If you only need seating for five, there's plenty of cargo room. The good news is that most of the time this vehicle doesn't feel underpowered. When on the interstate, the Escape Hybrid has enough guts to accelerate in order to merge into another lane. And around town you'll hardly feel starved for acceleration. It should also be noted that the Escape Hybrid has the ground clearance and 4WD capabilities of a decent crossover.
