Ford Escape Hybrid Begins Production - Automobile.com Ford Auto News
The relatively conventional looking Titanium Green 2005 Escape Hybrid 4x4 eased off the line with Ford Chairman and CEO Bill Ford and Charlie Hoskin of the United Auto Workers National Ford Department behind the wheel. Fuel sipping isnt the only area that the Hybrid Escape excels, as it also performs well in emissions testing. The SUVs squeaky clean powertrain releases 97 percent less hydrocarbons and nitrous oxides (NOx) than vehicles which meet the National Tier 1 Emissions Standards. Unsurprisingly, the Escape Hybrid is clean enough to qualify for the title of Advanced Technology Partial Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) which is the best classification that a car can get, until hydrogen-powered zero emissions vehicles become available en masse, or one of the majors produces another full electric.

Regarding emissions. The Escape Hybrid and a few other vehicles including the Prius (and a few conventional IC-engine cars such as one version of the Ford Focus and Honda Accord) are rated PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle).
Advanced Battery Technology: World's First Hybrid SUV Delivered to ...
The Ford Escape Hybrid is the cleanest and most fuel efficient SUV on the road, featuring the product strengths that have made Ford Escape one of the nation's best-selling small SUVs. The Escape Hybrid has a full-hybrid system that enables it to run on its gasoline engine, electric battery power, or both together.

In less demanding situations, the Escape Hybrid can run on its electric motor alone, its gasoline engine alone or the most efficient combination of the two. Full hybrids can achieve 50 percent or more improvement in fuel economy during stop-and-go driving, when the electric motor is most efficient.

The Escape Hybrid is the first SUV to combine a gasoline engine and electric motor assisted by a battery pack. While the technology makes it about $3,300 more expensive than a V-6 Escape, it also allows the front-wheel drive version to get 35-40 mpg in city driving, nearly double the mileage of a V-6 Escape.
What's At Stake: Suvsolutions.org
Recently, the first hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) made in the United States, and the first hybrid electric SUV, began production on a Kansas City assembly line-the Ford Escape Hybrid. The EPA fuel economy estimates for this vehicle are 31 mpg on the highway and 36 mpg in the city (hybrids typically get better city gas mileage because the "stop-and-go" traffic takes better advantage of regenerative breaking technology). A rare confluence of industry, labor, and environmentalists has come together to laud this advance in fuel-efficient technology. Ford now has an opportunity to build on this praise to become an industry vanguard for the entire Sport Utility Vehicle class. Indeed, the Escape Hybrid initiative is only a first step for two significant reasons. First, the Escape is a small SUV, which, while popular, is dwarfed in sales by mid-sized SUVs. Indeed, Ford's own Explorer mid-sized SUV is the best selling model in the United States, selling more than 400,000 units per year. Second, the Escape Hybrid is going to be produced at only 20,000-25,000 units per year, making up less than one half of one percent of Ford's total yearly vehicle production. Ford should be lauded for the introduction of the Escape Hybrid SUV. Consumers should also urge that Ford become the industry leader both with new hybrid models while simultaneously improving their conventional SUV line starting with the nation's #1 model, the Explorer.
