Ford Motor Company will officially begin shipping their new Escape Hybrid sport utility vehicle to many of its dealerships this month. Based on its popular, smaller SUV, the Escape Hybrid will be the first American-designed and built gasoline-electric hybrid. PHOTO CAPTION: 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid promises to significantly improve the fuel efficiency of this popular SUV, which is good news. But according to environmental critics, the 20,000 Escape Hybrid's the company plans to build for the 2005 model year, does nothing to improve what is the worst fleet-wide fuel economy of any of the major automakers.

Hybrid vehicles use a combination of a combustion engine along with an electric battery to make them run. The Escape Hybrid is considered a full hybrid, with its massive high-voltage battery in the rear where a spare tire is normally housed.

: Take Action :
In 2004 Ford released the Escape Hybrid and plans to produce just 20,000 of these vehicles in 2005. Unfortunately that's a small fraction of the more than six million vehicles Ford produces every year, including over 800,000 gas guzzling F-150's. In fact, Ford expects to sell 100,000 more F-150's this year than they did lat year.

Bill Ford, chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Company, told employees that the company would become a leader in safety, technology and design innovation. Part of Ford's future strategy involves producing more hybrid vehicles like the Escape Hybrid (below). Presently, Ford produces about 24,000 hybrid vehicles annually. Ford is the only American auto company to produce hybrids and was the first in the world to offer an SUV hybrid. That vehicle was the Ford Escape Hybrid, the cleanest, most fuel-efficient SUV on the road.

Ford Escape Hybrid Electric Vehicle The Ford Motor Company's Escape Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) debuted at the 2001 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show as the automaker announced production plans for the hybrid, electric-powered SUV. The Escape HEV is designed to be the cleanest, most fuel-efficient SUV with its electric drivetrain and four-cylinder gasoline engine that deliver about 40 miles per gallon in urban driving. The electric drive motor increases the performance of the internal combustion (IC) engine; it helps stop and start the engine, augments engine torque at low speeds, recaptures braking energy and recharges the vehicle's 300-volt battery. The Escape HEV will become part of a demonstration fleet later this year.

Model year 2005 is a landmark year for green vehicles and green vehicle technologies. The offering of hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) hit full stride this year with the introduction of another midsize sedan (Honda's Accord Hybrid) and-for the first time ever-a sport utility vehicle (Ford's Escape Hybrid). Offering 33 percent better fuel economy than its V6 conventional counterpart, the '05 Accord Hybrid is yet another feather in the cap of Honda, who has proven with its three hybrid models in three different size classes that this technology has few limitations. Driving that point home is the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid, which offers a 43 percent improvement in fuel economy over its gasoline counterpart in the 2wd configuration, and 55 percent improvement in the 4wd version.

The comments about the Escape Hybrid being a Toyota drive system is nonsense. It was all developed by Ford in-house at Dearborn, MI. Ford did a cross license agreement with Toyota to cover any patent infringement problems. And other components were involved in that agreement. There is nothing Toyota in the system. Ford had about 15 Master's degree people work on and build the system.

Those hybrids come from the most quality-conscious Japanese makers. It remains to be seen how well the forthcoming Ford Escape hybrid SUV will do. A point in its favor: Its hybrid powertrain will use components similar to those in the Prius.
