Press Release-Ford Focus/April 05,2004
Ford Escape Hybrid is the world's cleanest and most fuel-efficient sport utility. Available at the end of this summer, it combines the fuel economy and emissions benefits of a "full" hybrid with the go-anywhere capability, toughness and spaciousness of the Ford Escape, America's favorite small SUV. Escape Hybrid is the first hybrid electric vehicle that can comfortably accommodate five adults and their gear. The 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid is expected to be rated at between 35-40 mpg on the EPA city cycle - an improvement of at least 75 percent over the EPA city fuel economy rating of 20 mpg for the conventional V-6-powered Ford Escape, the best-selling small SUV in America. The Escape Hybrid also produces as little as half the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) - a harmless gas in terms of ground-level air quality but a primary "greenhouse gas" when it drifts into the Earth's upper atmosphere. An accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is widely believed to be producing a global warming effect. CO2 and water vapor are produced in the clean combustion of any type of carbon-based fuel, so the only effective way to reduce a vehicle's CO2 emissions is to reduce the amount of fuel consumed.
Daily Edition: Aug. 26, 2004 - The Car Connection
A plan by California to allow hybrids to travel the HOV lanes in the state is unfair to the Ford Escape Hybrid, the world's second-largest automaker says. A new bill in the California legislature would give other hybrids from Honda and Toyota access to the HOV lanes, but wouldn't permit the Ford Escape Hybrid because its gas mileage is estimated at 31 mpg highway, not the 45 mpg written into the bill. "Ford would not consider asking the California legislature to support a Buy American law," CEO Bill Ford wrote in a a letter to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and reported by Reuters.
Clean Car Campaign
Late next summer, Ford Motor Company promises to release the 2005 Escape Hybrid. The Escape Hybrid will be the first full-hybrid vehicle offered by a domestic auto manufacturer, and is expected to meet the Clean Car Campaign's standard for exceptional fuel economy and low-emissions. Ford reports that the hybrid Escape will deliver power similar to that of the current conventional V-6 Escape while achieving at least 35 mpg during stop-and-go city driving, nearly twice the 19 mpg city rating for the current V-6. The Escape Hybrid will also meet California's strict Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) standard. The Escape hybrid will no doubt be watched closely by the rest of the industry as well as Ford management, as an indicator of the potential for success in the hybrid vehicle market. You can help encourage Ford to invest in its Escape Hybrid marketing campaign by expressing your interest early, letting them know there is a large potential market for the vehicle. Ford already has a website in place to collect names of people who are interested in the Escape Hybrid.
