2005 Ford Escape Hybrid Review AutoSite New Car Reviews
It should come as no surprise, then, that the biggest automotive story of the year is the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid, billed by its manufacturer as the world's cleanest, most fuel-efficient SUV, and which could cost as little as $26,000 when it goes on sale later this summer. Ford claims that the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid achieves about 30 mpg on the highway and between 35 and 40 mpg in stop-and-go city driving. In fact, the Escape Hybrid proved its mettle on the streets of Manhattan in the days before the 2004 New York Auto Show. During 37 consecutive hours of driving on a single 15-gallon tank of fuel, the Escape Hybrid covered 576 miles at an average of better than 38 mpg while producing almost zero noxious emissions. According to Ford, the Escape Hybrid emits less than one pound of smog-forming pollution for every 15,000 miles it travels. Unlike some hybrids, this Escape is a full hybrid vehicle, meaning that it can operate solely on its battery pack without the internal combustion gasoline engine running. In fact, the Ford Escape Hybrid will be able to go as fast as 25 mph without burning a drop of fuel, albeit for short distances. The battery pack consists of 250 D-cell sized batteries located underneath the rear cargo floor. The Ford Escape Hybrid never needs to be plugged in for recharging, and a standard thermal management system keeps the batteries warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather for optimum performance and a longer lifespan. Ford estimates that in city driving, the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid can run purely on electric power as much as 40 percent of the time in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Ford Motor Company won the award with the Ford Escape Hybrid. The 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid is the first hybrid to be built in North America. 2005 Hybrid Comparison
As the odds-on favorite to win this competition, the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid is a landmark idea, one a whisker's width away from being lauded as the most notable vehicle of the new decade. Some will argue that it is, but it seems that such an honor still belongs to the Prius. Still, the Escape Hybrid has a lot going for it, namely good fuel mileage, near zero emissions, and SUV convenience. However, the Ford Escape Hybrid could not match the Prius when it came to value. For a sticker price nearing $30,000, fuel economy just wasn't good enough, and usable space wasn't significantly more useful than that of the Prius hatchback.
