As for how the Escape Hybrid actually goes: quite nicely, in fact, if not quickly. Sidle behind the wheel and, besides a small gauge to indicate boost from the electric motor, this Ford looks like a typical car inside, not a space pod. Turn the key and both the electric and gas engines fire up, but unless the gas motor is needed, you can pull out into traffic fully under electric power. More on the driving experience in a moment. First, it's worth noting that the Escape Hybrid is plenty roomy inside, with as much front- and second-row headroom as the Highlander Hybrid and nearly the same leg- and shoulder room. The good news is that this vehicle doesn't feel underpowered most of the time. When you're in traffic, there's enough guts to accelerate to merge into the other lane on the interstate, and around town you'll hardly feel starved for acceleration. And, it should be noted, the Escape Hybrid has the ground clearance and four-wheel-drive capabilities of a decent crossover.
