2005 Jeep Liberty CRD Test Drive and Review - Jeep's New Diesel SUV
Good looking as it is, you won't confuse the Liberty with one of your cute 'utes. While its exterior dimensions would seem to put it in the same weight category as, say, the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V, at almost 4300 lbs the Liberty CRD is a good 800lbs heavier than either. And that extra weight is all muscle. The Liberty has a stocky, broad-shouldered, go-anywhere, do-anything air about it that makes its rivals look like citified girlie-trucks. But then, Jeeps have always had a reputation of being more than just boulevard cruisers. SUV now becomes the most fuel-efficient. OK, the jury's still out on that. But, it's at least a very close second to the new Ford Escape Hybrid. The Liberty CRD has simply astonishing performance - astonishing all the more because it has only four cylinders pushing 4,300 lbs of 4WD. Like all diesels, the Liberty CRD moves out a bit slowly at first. But as soon as the revs have built up just a bit, it pulls like a draft horse up to limit.

KUTV: Autos
Fun is worth something, it's true. It's just no longer as valuable as 40-plus miles to the gallon. Blame the government, or the Oil Barons. Sadly for the Ford Escape Hybrid, it doesn't matter for a hybrid that is neither really fun nor really fuel-efficient.

KUTV: Autos
Wow. Looks like the so-called experts had it wrong - an SUV isn't a shoe-in when it comes to interior comfort and convenience, not when you factor in the quality of its construction. Like the Los Angeles Lakers without Shaq, the Ford Escape Hybrid was missing that one critical piece to puzzle when the whistle blew and the game began: quality, at least when compared to the Prius and the Accord Hybrid. Exposed screws, ill-fitting construction, and a general lack of refinement plague the Ford Escape Hybrid. It was also the least comfortable of the three, with front seat bottoms that were too short and too hard, hard plastic armrests on the doors, and tight accommodations for rear seat passengers. There seems to be more people room in the back of the Prius. Worse, cargo room looks to be slightly less than the regular Escape - perhaps the battery on the back cargo floor, or the vented rear windows contribute to the difference.

The Escape hybrid uses a system similar to that in the Toyota Prius, a "full" or "parallel" hybrid powertrain. This means it can be driven by its gasoline engine, its electric engine, or both at the same time. The Ford Escape hybrid meets California SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) and PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) standards. The Ford Escape hybrid comes with 4-wheel anti-lock brakes standard, and scores well in crash testing, with top five-star scores for the driver in frontal impacts, and four stars for the front passenger. It scored five stars for both front- and rear-seat occupants in side impact test. In the frontal offset test, it did not score as well, earning a second-highest "Acceptable" rating.
