The top selling SUVs for 2004 were, in order, the Ford Explorer, the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Ford Escape and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. While most industry professionals may not be surprised by any of the top sellers, what may be something of a shock is the sheer number of units attached to each model. And similar to the pickup-truck market, SUV owners are not shy when it comes to accessorizing.
2003 Ford Escape
The Ford Escape is one of the best of the small, affordable SUVs, assuming that off-road travel isn't a priority. The Escape offers agile handling on paved and unpaved roads. It accelerates briskly when equipped with the optional V6 engine. It rides smoothly and its refined interior seats four people comfortably. Folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. The Ford Escape is wider than other compact SUVs, and this gives it a look that is both aggressive and well planted. Ford designers worked to balance the confidence and ruggedness of a big SUV with a sportier image of agility and fun. The Escape's forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. The Ford Escape is one of the best of the small, on-road SUVs. The available V6 engine provides the Escape with the most power in its class. A four-wheel independent suspension and unit-body construction make it handle almost as well as a car. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. It isn't designed for serious off-road driving, nor are its direct competitors.

EV World Blogs: Personal Perspectives on the Future In Motion
Checking the (22 Aug 05) figures in EV World's Hybrid Guide, input from readers indicates that the average Ford Escape Hybrid is doing less than 49% of its miles in the city, and the average Honda Insight is doing less than 39%.

The hybrid's success bodes well for the future of this technology. The recently released Ford Escape Hybrid, as well as the upcoming Lexus RX 400h, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and Honda Accord Hybrid, clearly show that the hybrid option will not be limited to smaller vehicles.
2005 Ford Freestyle
Built on the same platform and incorporating much of the mechanicals of the new Ford Five Hundred, the Freestyle nevertheless looks more like the Ford Escape compact SUV than the car. From all angles, there are more of the Escape's styling cues than any of the car's cues, from the unadorned and somewhat upright front end to the fender blisters, tall side glass and hefty C-pillar to the liftgate and heavily bumpered tail end.
What Makes Hybrids Go?
However, many things have changed over the past 20 years - speed limits have increased, congestion has increased, and vehicles have more power-hungry accessory equipment, such as automatic climate control. The EPA tests are conducted in controlled laboratory conditions, at average speeds of no more than 48 mph, without air conditioning and at moderate temperatures. Test values are then adjusted down using adjustment factors developed by the EPA in the mid-80s. While this provides consistent comparison data, it is widely accepted that many drivers of all types of vehicles experience lower results than the labels. For example, during Autobytel testing, the Toyota Prius consistently logged a miles-per-gallon rating in the mid-to-upper-40s, and other hybrids, such as the Ford Escape Hybrid, rated real world in the mid-to-upper 20s.
2002 Ford Escape
With the V6 engine, which is standard in the XLT version for 2002 and an option in the XLS, the Ford Escape offers the most power in its category. A four-wheel independent suspension and unitbody construction make it handle almost as well as a car. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with.
