Sure, you can drive an Escape with pretty much the same four-cylinder engine-it's not an Atkinson-cycle, so it gets slightly worse gas mileage than if it did-and see how it drives compared to the hybrid. The answer is that yes, the regular four-cylinder Escape gets good fuel mileage, but it wouldn't get up and go nearly as quickly, either.
