The Escape Hybrid went on sale last September. Ford expected to sell about 3,000 Escape Hybrids last year and plans to sell about 20,000 this year. There is demand to sell more, but the automaker is constrained by the number of battery packs available from supplier Sanyo.
Ford Escape Hybrids Become NYC Taxis
Last week, the New York City taxi fleet gained six of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road. Instead of the usual Crown Victoria four-doors, the city commissioned six new Escape Hybrid SUVs, becoming the first hybrid vehicles to take their place in the city's taxi fleet. In New York, taxis must be new vehicles - not decommissioned police cars or other used fleet vehicles, as in other cities. The Escape Hybrid went on sale last year, and Ford says sales of the gas-electric SUV are strong, with sales rising in recent months in lockstep with gas prices.

The remaining vehicles are expected to be utilized primarily in urban National Parks in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and New York. David Molinas and Ilana Cohn, student interpreters sponsored by Ford and the National Park Foundation, arrived at ceremony from the C&O Canal on Ford- donated bicycles. Ford will tout the fuel efficiency of its new Escape, which will look just like its popular conventional-engine SUV, by putting hybrid decals on all four sides of the vehicle. The Escape Hybrid is expected to receive an EPA estimated fuel-economy rating of between 35 and 40 miles per gallon, or more than 50 percent better than its conventional SUV. Ford will market the Escape Hybrid to environmentally conscious consumers by advertising in magazines such as Mother Jones and Outside and television channels National Geographic and Animal Planet, according to Feuell. The Rev. Jim Ball, executive director of the Evangelical Environmental Network, is concerned that the arrival of the Escape Hybrid will increase the number of SUVs on the road since the car is being marketed to non-SUV owners.
