Federal Tax Credits for Advanced Vehicles: On August 8, President Bush signed the comprehensive energy bill into law. Included were new tax credits for advanced vehicle technologies ranging from $250 to $3,400 depending on the vehicle's level of fuel economy improvement. For a limited time, quality hybrids like the Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota Prius or Ford Escape Hybrid will qualify for tax credits in the range of $1,700-$3,150. The tax credits will be available beginning on January 1, 2006 and will be available through December 31, 2010, though they will expire earlier for the most popular hybrids.

After the success of the Toyota Prius, Ford built the first hybrid sport utility vehicle. While a price tag has not been made public the Ford Escape Hybrid should hit showrooms by the end of the year. Aimed at the loyal SUV driver the car will be able to operate in either full battery mode or full gas mode and get 35-40 mpg in the city.

There are three mainstream hybrids on the market now, each covering a different genre. The Toyota Prius is a 5-door hatchback, family sedan. The Honda Insight is a 2-seater coupe, and the Ford Escape is an SUV. These vehicles have a price premium on them, but will end up being cheaper for the owner in the long run. The tax incentive and the decrease in the amount of gas needed will offset the price.

"Literally everyone who has driven the Escape Hybrid has been amazed at the pick-up," said Brian Jones, Jones Ford General Manager. "This is a small SUV with plenty of room, yet it gets 36 miles to the gallon in town and 31 on the highway. The Ford Escape uses both an electric and a gasoline motor for power. At lower speeds and otherwise when maximum power is not required, the car runs off its battery. When more power is needed, the gasoline engine automatically cuts in. Often the driver does not know which power plant is in use since both are extremely quiet.

"But this partnership is more important now than ever. Members of UAW Local 249 are building the new Escape Hybrid at Ford's assembly plant in Claycomo. The introduction of the new Escape Hybrid made Ford the first domestic automaker to introduce hybrid-electric technology to the mainstream market, and also the first in the popular small SUV segment. The Escape Hybrid achieves up to 36 miles per gallon in city driving, or more than a 50 percent improvement over the standard Escape.

But the introduction of the Ford Escape ushers in the era of low-mileage hybrids. The hybrid Escape's overall fuel economy is better than other vehicles in its class but is still only half that of the Prius or Civic.
