In Model Year 2005 Ford is building just 20,000 hybrid Escapes. That's about six-tenths of one percent of Ford's total vehicle lineup.

The first hybrid-powered SUV reached dealerships in the 2005 model year. The Escape Hybrid is Fords first entrant into the hybrid segment. Delivering its power to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, the Escape Hybrid can run on its four-cylinder gasoline engine, electric power only (for short distances) or a combination of the two.

Inside, almost nothing was changed to denote a 2005 hybrid Escape from its predecessors. The four-spoke steering wheel tilt adjusts and houses cruise control buttons. The gauge package gets a 120-mph speedometer and 7,000-rpm tach that dips to zero when the electric motor is the sole propellant in the center, a gas gauge on the right and a needle that shows when your are using battery or charging it on the left.

Even as Motor Trend has named the hybrid Toyota Prius its 2004 Car of the Year, the Big Three have stalled on their own hybrid plans. Ford intended to release its hybrid Escape SUV by the end of 2003, but is delaying the release until summer 2004. It has also scrapped its 2000 pledge to improve the fuel economy of its SUVs 25 percent by 2005.

While the hybrid Escape shows that Ford can use better technology to make its vehicles go farther on a gallon of gas, its overall fleet fuel economy is still the worst of any major automaker.
