2005 Ford Escape Hybrid Review AutoSite New Car Reviews
It should come as no surprise, then, that the biggest automotive story of the year is the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid, billed by its manufacturer as the world's cleanest, most fuel-efficient SUV, and which could cost as little as $26,000 when it goes on sale later this summer. Without the 70 kW permanent-magnet electric motor assist, the Ford Escape Hybrid would not perform as though it was equipped with a V6 engine. When additional power is needed, such as when accelerating from a stop or when passing, the Escape Hybrid's electric motor supplements the gasoline engine in making power. Ford claims that the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid achieves about 30 mpg on the highway and between 35 and 40 mpg in stop-and-go city driving. In fact, the Escape Hybrid proved its mettle on the streets of Manhattan in the days before the 2004 New York Auto Show. During 37 consecutive hours of driving on a single 15-gallon tank of fuel, the Escape Hybrid covered 576 miles at an average of better than 38 mpg while producing almost zero noxious emissions. According to Ford, the Escape Hybrid emits less than one pound of smog-forming pollution for every 15,000 miles it travels.

Ford Escape Reviews and Ratings - 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid
To be sure, it's not the first time an automaker delayed a product launch, and it certainly won't be the last. Hopefully, the delay means that Ford has had plenty of time for fine-tuning and working out any of the bugs associated with the launch of a new vehicle. From this first drive, it seems that the Escape Hybrid is off to a strong start. The hybrid version of the Escape doesn't look radically different from the conventional, gasoline-only version either outside or inside. On the exterior, the Escape Hybrid has unique badging designating its greenness with the word "hybrid" marked by a leaf-and-road logo that Ford uses to denote environmentally friendly vehicles. Inside, the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid benefits from the interior upgrades that were given to all 2005 Escape models, making the interior quieter and more luxurious than the previous generation. Both the instrument panel and the center stack are revised versions of the conventional Escape. A gauge on the instrument panel is devoted to the status of the 250-cell battery pack, while the tachometer has a "green zone" below zero rpm, indicating when the vehicle is in electric-only mode. In the center stack, an optional display screen shows the real-time energy flow of the hybrid system, as well as has navigation functions and audio controls. Another handy feature you won't find on the conventional Escape is the 110-volt outlet located in the center console.

Fun to drive, the Ford Escape offers impressive road manners for a compact SUV. It drives much like a tautly suspended sedan, with little body roll and responsive steering. The V6 is quite powerful, providing swift acceleration, but fuel economy is mediocre.

Other than a few well-placed hybrid badges, the exterior of Ford Escape Hybrid looks similar to its non-hybrid Escape counterpart. The fact that Ford Escape Hybrid is being built at the same Kansas City, Missouri plant as non hybrid Escapes probably contributes to this similarity. The Ford Escape Hybrid uses a full hybrid system that allows it to run on the gas engine, the electric motor, or a combination of both. If conditions are right, it shuts off the gas engine to decrease fuel consumption and smog-forming emissions.

Because it's a full hybrid, Escape Hybrid is able to run on either its gasoline engine or on its electric motor depending on driving conditions. It can drive exclusively in electric mode during slower speeds and does not need to engage the internal combustion engine as long as there is enough power stored in the battery.

The exterior styling of the Escape Hybrid does not differ from the normal Escape in any significant manner. It remains an attractive workhorse. The only way one would know it to be a hybrid-fuel vehicle is a small "leaf and road" badge, and the word "hybrid" on the side of the car.
