Test Drive Notes:2002 Nissan Xterra SE 4WD
The Nissan Xterra is kind of a throwback, a return to those days, a decade or two ago, when sports-utility vehicles were basically trucks. The Xterra is based on the Frontier pickup truck, with its body-on-frame construction and a shift lever for the part-time, four-wheel-drive system sticking up out of the floor. The Xterra is clearly less "luxuried-up" than car-based SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, the Subaru Forester, the Ford Escape or the Honda CR-V. On the other hand, it's bigger and cheaper than those vehicles.

The best rating of any truck in the government tests was achieved by Ford. The Ford Ranger 2-Wheel-Drive pickup truck got 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg highway. A 5-speed version of the Ford Ranger was used to get the results. The Mazda B2300 2-Wheel-Drive Pickup truck tied with the Ford Ranger achieving the same results. The new Ford Escape was tops among Sport Utility Vehicles. The hybrid SUV got 36 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

The Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid are equipped with Ford's first-generation transaxle, which Ford developed jointly with Aisin AW. Aisin also supplied Toyota with the transaxle for the first-generation Prius. CTA currently has four Ford Escape hybrids in its fleet of non-revenue vehicles that are used by field personnel to monitor bus route performance, transport materials and travel to maintenance facilities. The plug-in hybrid bus will join the town's seven electric vehicles used in the parks, eight compressed natural gas cars assigned to various town departments, and its seven Ford Escape SUV hybrids used by the animal shelter, building department, public safety and administrative services departments.

Mercury has its first Milan, a hybrid, coming. Essentially a Ford Fusion that is dearly needed for this brand to exist in a competitive marketplace. Joining the Milan is the SUV Mariner, essentially a Ford Escape hybrid so it is going to be very good.
