Ford has recalled more than 1 million vehicles in two recalls to replace the switch. The first recall was in May 1999, affecting 279,000 Ford Crown Victorias, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars for model years 1992 and 1993. The second, issued in January 2005, affected 792,000 vehicles, including model year 2001 F-Series SuperCrews, 2000 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, and 2000 F-150 trucks.

The recalled tires, 17-inch Continental ContiTrac AW and General Grabber AW models, were installed as original equipment on 106,701 two-wheel-drive Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles covering 2000 and some 2001 models.

Federal investigators and Ford engineers have linked some of the fires to a cruise-control deactivation switch. They're examining why the switch, made by Texas Instruments and used on at least 10 million Ford vehicles, has caused fires on only some of those vehicles while leaving the vast majority of the other Ford models unscathed. In January, the company recalled about 740,000 2000 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator sport-utility vehicles and Ford F-150 pickups that contained the switch.

In January, Ford recalled 750,000 model-year 2000 Ford F-150 pickups and Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. The new recall adds more model years and a version of the Ford Bronco - all with factory-installed cruise control - to the list. The new recall is the fifth largest in history.
