NHTSA documents show its inquiry is focused on a cruise-control deactivation switch that can overheat. That switch has been linked to engine fires on Ford F-150 pickups and Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.

The cruise-control recall involves 792,000 2000 Ford F-150 pickups and Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator sport-utility vehicles, as well as 2001 Ford F-150 Supercrew pickups equipped with automatic cruise control. There have been 63 reports of fires that may have been caused by malfunctioning switches and one unconfirmed report of injury. Ford is asking owners to have dealers disable the cruise control for now.

R17 tires. Consumers will receive free replacements. The tires involved have DOT codes from 109 to 4400. They were produced between March 1999 and October 2000 and furnished as original equipment on 106,701 2000-model year and certain 2001-model year two-wheel-drive Ford Expedition and two-wheel-drive Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicles. Approximately 60,000 of the tires are in the replacement market.
