The Explorer serves as a corporate twin to the Mercury Mountaineer. What is the Explorer Sport Trac, exactly? With the growing popularity of pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles, the inevitable hybrids have begun popping up. Several recent entries have tried to combine the best qualities of SUVs and pickup trucks by grafting a small bed onto the end of a four-door truck. Unlike four-door pickups, the one-piece body offers improved structural rigidity and a better ride. This ploy has met with mixed success. Chevrolet's full-size Avalanche "ultimate utility vehicle" is a cut-down Suburban, and has been selling like hotcakes. In spite of the modern looks, the Sport Trac is based on the second-generation Explorer that debuted almost ten years ago. Although the Explorer has been redesigned since then, the Sport Trac still uses the old, solid rear axle architecture, and this is where it falls down compared to conventional sport-utes. The problem is the suspension. The short-long arm independent front suspension is about as refined as it can be, but it's outshined by newer sport-utes-both pavement-bred and off-road bred. There's a lot of body lean in turns, and the Sport Trac rarely feels controlled on uneven pavement or during hard stops. Off-road, it is an adequate performer, but it lacks the maneuverability needed for serious brush bashing. For 2003 Ford has improved the braking power, with four-wheel disc brakes and standard anti-lock brakes.
