When the Explorer plant in Louisville shuts down for their usual two-week summer vacation, the Sport Trac will take the 2006 model year off. The plant will prepare for the revised 2006 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer and does not want to add a third new model to further complex the assembly line. The 2007 Sport Trac, which will look much like the 2005 concepts, will begin production in early 2006. Ford believes they have enough supplies of the current Sport Trac so dealers won't see a shortage in the lag time.

Ford's Explorer Sport Trac is getting an extreme makeover, and the automaker will show off the results at the 2005 Detroit auto show in January when it debuts a concept version of its quirky, half-truck, half-SUV. The Sport Trac concept grows both in the interior and in the cargo bed over the existing Explorer Sport Trac, which debuted in 2001.

There are a variety of factors that should allow the new Sport Trac to handle curves with better stability too, starting with its new independent rear suspension, to go along with the upgraded independent front system derived from the current Explorer, both of which are optimized by a ride height that's lowered by approximately 50 mm (2 inches). All of the Sport Trac concept's primary gauges are integrated within a single oval instrument cluster, with a large speedometer positioned next to a large tachometer.
