Ford coined the sport-utility truck segment nearly five years ago with the Explorer Sport Trac. That model has received no notable changes since its inception, but now an Explorer Sport Trac concept truck arrives as a precursor to the 2007 production makeover. With other new sport-utility trucks on the horizon, including Honda's new Ridgeline SUT which also debuts at the North American International Auto Show, it is imperative that Ford update the aging Sport Trac to remain competitive. The Explorer Sport Trac concept is a solid first step.

"The 2007 Sport Trac offers the same impressive suite of safety features as the 2006 Explorer," says Sue Cischke, vice president, Environmental and Safety Engineering. "It offers active safety technology - including confidence-inspiring handling and braking combined with AdvanceTrac(R) with industry-exclusive Roll Stability Control (RSC(R)) - to help prevent accidents.

Bad News: The 2004 Sport Trac finished last in the government's new safety test designed to predict the likelihood of a rollover during a sharp turn. The two-wheel-drive model was the only vehicle tested to receive two stars out of a possible five. Tests on the 4WD model were inconclusive, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will repeat the test later. The two-star rating means the rollover risk in a one-vehicle crash is 30 to 40 percent, according to NHTSA criteria. Ford says the test uses an extreme maneuver that does not necessarily reflect real-world driving and that company tests indicate the Sport Trac is safe. Good News: Even though it's based on the same platform as the previous generation Explorer, the Sport Trac makes up 15-20 percent of all current Explorer sales. Last year, Ford sold just over 373,000 Explorers-down from 433,847 in 2002. That means anywhere from 56,000 to 74,000 Sport Tracs were sold in 2003. That's more than all GMC Sonomas (35,040) or Nissan Frontiers (65,161), let alone their 4-door crew cab models that Sport Trac cross-shoppers would compare. Bad News: The Sport Trac is based on the old Explorer platform. While profits may be steady because the assembly line hasn't been retooled, the Sport Trac is showing its age in both appearance and performance. And don't forget, the old Explorer had its share of image problems following the Firestone tire fiasco.

Last but not least was a concept vehicle for the next-generation Ford Explorer Sport Trac. An SUV with a pickup bed at the back, the vehicle is updated with ground effects and 21-inch wheels, and it sits lower to the ground than the current Sport Trac. The pickup bed is deeper and has more storage space, while the 4-door passenger compartment is 5 inches longer and roomier.

But there's more up Ford's sleeve concerning performance. The Sport Trac Adrenalin is also available with the option of all-wheel drive - yet another first for the SVT team. Previous high-performance pickups have always relied on a rear-wheel drive layout to maximize straight-line performance and entertaining burnouts. The Sport Trac Adrenalin concept is a change from the usual for SVT, but it's a change for the better. The Adrenalin is faster, safer, and smarter than past performance trucks, but it's also more practical with its larger cabin, bed and towing capacity.
