2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
As its name implies, the Explorer Sport Trac is based on the Ford Explorer, the best selling sport-utility in America. Sport Trac is based on the previous-generation Explorer, however, so it does not benefit from the 2003 Explorer's independent rear suspension and other advances. But Ford has enhanced Sport Trac's safety systems for 2003. Four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS come standard. Ford Explorer Sport Trac has a rugged, utilitarian look with chunky cladding trimming the lower portions of its bulging body. Sport Trac looks like a box, twice over. First comes the five-seat cabin, and then the bed trailing behind, like a separate unit. The bed walls are nearly 20 inches high.

Road Test - 2000 Ford Explorer Sport - Motor Trend
It all adds up to a more pleasant-to-drive Explorer. The 205-horse V-6 is more than adequate in the four-door, but downright brisk in the lighter Sport. The transmission's closely spaced first-, second-, and third-gear ratios keep the motor neatly in the heart of its powerband, for around-town and freeway-onramp duty. And there's no question the new springs, shocks, and body mounts make for a quieter, more polished ride-although you still won't mistake the Explorer Sport for anything but a short-wheelbase, truck-spawned SUV. You will, however, appreciate that shorter wheelbase when negotiating tight, off-road trails. There's adequate room in the back passenger area, though it is, of course, a bit more of a hassle climbing back there than it would be in a four-door.
2000 Ford Explorer Prices and Review
America's best-selling SUV adds a new body style, blending a 4-door SUV cabin with a pickup-truck bed to create the Explorer Sport Trac. A 2001 model, Sport Trac is 15 inches longer overall than the 4-door Explorer, with a 14-inch-longer wheelbase. A 4-foot-long open bed with a drop-down tailgate replaces the enclosed cargo area. The composite plastic cargo box has a molded-in bedliner. An optional tubular cage "extends" the bed 23 inches with the tailgate down or flips to secure objects with the gate up. Inside the bed is a 12-volt powerpoint; a locking 2-piece hard tonneau cover is optional. Since so many vehicles look alike, the Consumer Guide® 2000 Ford Explorer new-vehicle review includes an extensive photo gallery. The 2000 Ford Explorer features a selection of interior and exterior images.
