2001 Ford Explorer Sport-Trac - Review
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a valiant attempt at trying to combine the best of both worlds-small SUV and pickup, and in many ways the Sport-Trac succeeds. In the crew cab segment, there are plenty of good choices, and maybe the Sport-Trac is just a crew cab pickup and not some crossover SUV. Models such as the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Chevy S-10 and Dodge Dakota all offer crew cab configurations. Acceleration is more than adequate, and the Sport Trac has the competition beat hands down with more horsepower than any other V6 crew cab truck. The Sport-Tracs 205 hp is obvious when passing at highway speeds, or simply merging onto the highway from a stop. The S-10 and Tacoma both have 190 hp, the Dakota 175 hp, and the Frontier (non supercharged) offers 170. The Dakota is available with a V8, something the others lack.

Despite slow sales, a new Sport Trac will be added to the Explorer line in early 2006 for the 2007 model year. Unlike its predecessor, sold through 2005, it will feature the V8 engine as an option, and will be based on the new, larger Explorer platform.

On the highway, the Sport Trac handles smoothly and is surprisingly quiet. There's not much road noise from the big tires, nor wind noise from the big mirrors. Ford's designers have used something new called quiet steel for the dash panel, which has 100 times greater noise damping than plain cold rolled steel. The base price for a 2WD Sport Trac is $28,345. The model tested, a 4x4, lists at $33,345. On-board options - limited slip differential, power moon roof, premium sport group, convenience group, cargo cage, skid plates, leather seating and power driver's seat - brought the total to $38,665.

For a base target price of around $23,000, the Sport Trac comes in a little pricey when compared to other trucks that most closely resemble it. The Nissan Frontier 4-door and the Dodge Dakota QuadCab pickups come in $4,000-5,000 cheaper (albeit a little more bare).

The Explorer Sport Trac combines the benefits of the four-door Explorer with the added utility of a 4-foot long cargo area made of durable sheet molding composite - a first in the segment - for "one-vehicle-does-it-all" versatility. The cargo area features, which include an optional device that extends the length of the cargo area and an optional lockable hard tonneau cover, allow it to be converted easily to accommodate a wide variety of cargo.
2001 Explorer Sport Trac and Explorer Sport - The Car Connection
Of the seven, two are brand new to the fold for this year - or the 2001 model year, however you measure. One of those is the new 2001 Explorer Sport Trac; another is the redesigned 2001 two-door Ford Explorer Sport. Ford executives say that with the Explorer Sport Trac they were looking for an "and" vehicle - one that could do everything a sport-utility vehicle could do and more. It combines the interior space of a sport-utility vehicle, specifically the Explorer, with an open cargo area from a pickup truck. Inside the sport-utility-sized cabin, seating accommodates five adults. New bucket seats up front were designed specifically for the Sport Trac to be easy to clean. It features a thick rubber-type floor covering that allows owners to hose out the interior.

Visually, the Sport Trac is not very smooth. It's a rugged, utilitarian look with chunky gray cladding along the sides, and bulges along the body. The standard roof rack consists of just two longitudinal bars, with the crossbars sold as an option, but they are necessary. The lack of crossbars severely limits the things you could otherwise easily strap on.

OUTSIDE - Sport Trac gets plenty of attention on the road, much of it due to its truncated 50-inch long cargo bed. Made from a durable, lightweight sheet molding composite, there is no need for a bed liner. Also, an optional stainless steel cargo cage flips from the bed onto the open tailgate, increasing the bed's length to just under 73 inches. That same tailgate is made of steel, and has been borrowed from the Ford F-150 Flareside pickup. A weatherproof 12-volt outlet is located inside the bed, and a tonneau cover is optional for it. This 70-pound plastic cover is lockable and hinged in the center for easy access, but it's removal requires two people. BEHIND THE WHEEL - The Sport Trac's foundation rests on a full-frame chassis that is rugged and stiff. Its chassis is more robust than the Explorer frame on which it's based due to the addition of thicker side rails, tubular frame cross-members and extra gusseting. This extra strength makes it 40 percent more resistant to twisting, and it's noticeable on the road. Two-stage progressive leaf springs aren't new to the truck industry, but Sport Trac has them and they contribute to a softer ride and an increased load capacity. Also, the shock absorbers were revalved, and the front and rear anti-roll bars were revised. The standard all-disc braking system has been upgraded with larger front rotors, beefier calipers and tougher brake pad material.
