Daily Edition: Sep. 8, 2004 - The Car Connection
Ford is ending the second shift of production at its Hazlewood, Missouri, plant, leaving 800 workers without work and leaving the plant down to a single shift building Ford Explorers, Mercury Mountaineers, and Lincoln Aviators. The suburban St. Louis plant has been warned in the past that its lifespan could be measured in months: in September 2003 Ford said it would shutter the plant and move production to the Louisville plant that also builds Explorers, but an effort by Missouri governor Bob Holden led to the plant getting a stay of execution. Ford has agreed with the UAW to keep the plant open through 2007, although a spokesperson reminded Reuters that the plan to eliminate the second shift had been noted and in the making all along.
