Pat Goss: The sensor? There are many sensors and there are hundreds of things that can cause the check engine light to come on. Essentially there is only one thing you can do your self without a major outlay for test equipment.

Mode 04 will allow you to connect to your vehicle's main server and erase all diagnostic files. No password is required but you will be prompted to make sure you want to do this. If on, the check engine MIL light will be extinguished, trouble codes will disappear, all testing can be aborted and declared incomplete, with monitoring restarted. Note it can take several days to monitor and complete a final exam depending on the way you drive.

This may be coincidental that while the fuel gauge is moving back and forth, the check engine light illuminates. Movement of the gauge is a common occurrence in many vehicles. After all, fuel sloshes back and forth in the gas tank as the vehicle slows and accelerates. As for illumination of the check engine light, this may be caused by a fuel system-related problem. There may be a vacuum leak in the fuel system at the gas tank or hoses related to the evaporative system.

By simply plugging the unit into the vehicles diagnostic port, a few simple keystrokes can confirm that your O2 sensor is dead, or if some other problem has triggered the check engine light.

The check engine light may or may not indicate a problem or a potential problem. For example, on some vehicles it may go on if a sensor goes bad or there is a problem with the pollution control among many other reasons. Sometimes tho it's just an error ie some code stuck in ram. It's common for auto repair shops to simply disconnect the car's computer, wait a bit, and plug it back in and see if the Check Engine light goes away.
