The 1995 Ford Explorer rolled after the driver lost control on a country highway. The driver, a middle-aged female, lost control after being cut off by a reckless driver. The vehicle rolled several times, critically injuring the driver. A scene investigation and interviews of the driver, passenger and witnesses indicated the vehicle was not exceeding the speed limit or being operated in a reckless fashion. The high center of gravity, narrow track width and poor handling characteristics produce a vehicle with an unacceptably high rollover rate. These vehicles have well-documented stability deficiencies during tire delamination and emergency maneuvering. In a separate case, a male teen driving a 4-door 2000 Ford Explorer veered off the road to the right. He steered to the left to get back on the road. The vehicle oversteered and entered a counterclockwise yaw as it came back on the roadway. The driver turned to the right in an attempt to regain control of the Explorer. The vehicle oversteered again, entered into a clockwise yaw and left the tire yaw marks shown in the photographs. The vehicle became airborne at the end of the yaw marks and rolled multiple times.
