2006 Detroit Auto Show Preview - The Car Connection
Ford's new Explorer Sport Trac arrives in the 2007 model year pretty much as the concept did at the 2005 Detroit show. The Sport Trac, now based on the four-door Explorer platform, has an independent suspension and a body shell 444-percent stiffer than the outgoing vehicle.

When it was first introduced five years ago, the Explorer Sport Trac was unique in appearance. It aimed to possess a wonderful combination of genes: the comfort and convince of a sport utility, along with a practical cargo area, a standard truck bed in condensed form. In some ways the Sport Trac was ahead of its time. It was hurriedly created to fit an emerging market in an effort to dominate the competition, but it ended up with some less than desirable traits. The Sport Trac was afflicted by the outdated chassis of the Explorer on which it was based. The basic design spanned more than decade, and it soon began to show its age. As more things changed in SUV territory, the Sport Trac remained the same. It did not receive an overhaul when the 2002 Explorer was given a complete update, so it lacked the independent rear suspension that almost every other SUV on the road has today.

First Look: 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Concept
Ford's original "utility sport truck," introduced four years ago, hasn't gone away-it was just lost in the shuffle. It entered one of the fastest growing segments in the industry, according to its maker, but the six-cylinder-only Sport Trac was quickly left behind in an avalanche of compact and midsize four-door pickups. Without much fanfare or advertising, the Ford Sport Trac has sold well, stabilizing at 50,000 units, providing more of a placeholder for better times to come than anything else. The Sport Trac was based on the crude, aging Ranger platform, itself a truck that has suffered delay after delay in getting a replacement. Ford's solution, as hinted with this Detroit auto-show concept, is the obvious answer-base the next Sport Trac on the current Explorer. Although it doesn't quite have a miniature pickup bed like the Hummer H2 SUT, the 2007 Sport Trac should be more memorable as a truck smartly derived from Ford's top-selling SUV. The concept is in custom street-rod form with shaved door handles, lowered suspension, and 21-inch wheels.

The 2007 Explorer Sport Trac is new from the ground up. From the B-pillar forward, the vehicle's design is shared with the 2006 Explorer; the inside includes a new console-mounted gear selector designed after that of the F-150 pickup. It also includes a cargo box with tiered storage and three storage bins with drain plugs. The truck features an all-new chassis inspired by the Ford F-150. The Sport Trac features a tube-through-tube frame design, where the cross beams pass through the frame rails. This results in a 444 percent increase in stiffness, according to Ford. An all new suspension was also added to the 2007 Explorer Sport Trac. Monotube shocks are tuned for damping of harsh impacts such as potholes, and for the first time, the Sport Trac features an independent rear suspension.
