By using this platform, Ford is able to build SUV attributes into a car, like higher seating, increased interior space, and optional all-wheel drive. The Five Hundred has considerably more interior space than the full-size Crown Victoria, even though it's only 25 centimeters shorter. Tellingly, George Bucher, chief designer of the Five Hundred, describes it in terms of having "road authority" and "presence" (rather than using adjectives like beautiful or sleek). With this design Ford is emphasizing refinement and lack of ostentation, and while it's by no means unattractive, neither is the Five Hundred particularly exciting. If anything, it's a return to the traditional car form, but featuring the latest safety and technical innovations.

Ford Five Hundred: Here Comes the Savior? - Automotive Articles ...
That could all change as Ford declares this the Year of the Car. New models about to be launched from the Blue Oval include the Mazda6-based Fusion sedan, the newly retro Mustang, the crossover Freestyle, and the large Five Hundred Sedan. The last two are based on a version of the Volvo platform that underpins the front-wheel-drive S80 sedan, the largest in Volvos lineup. With these new vehicles, Ford hopes not only to increase profits and reduce incentives, but prove to buyers that American car companies can make cars that are just as desirable and competitive as their trucks. One of the Five Hundreds main selling points will be the way it was designed to meet SUV owners half way, so to speak. This is not a small car, by any stretch. What Ford calls Command Seating will only enhance that feeling. Front seat passengers sit upwards of four inches higher in the Five Hundred than if they were in an average sedan. The rear seat passengers are even higher. This gives occupants the more upright feeling of being in an SUV with the lower step-in height of a sedan. Ford claims that Command Seating affords driver and passengers a commanding view of the road, pardon the cliché. A premium image is directly what Ford is aiming for, inside and out, with the look of the new Five Hundred. Designed under the direction of Fords J Mays, the Five Hundred has a distinctly Volkswagen Group flair. Whether looking at the exterior or interior, one can see similarities to VAG favorites like the Audi A6. This is not a coincidence, as J Mays is the former design leader at Audi when the company developed its current design direction. While it may not be entirely original, the Five Hundred does have a flavor of classic elegance about it.

2005 Ford Five Hundred - The Car Connection
But no amount of marketing, guerilla or otherwise, may be able to reach the Five Hundred crowd, unless it comes in a large-print version. Ford says it's aiming the full-size Five Hundred sedan at those older, wiser, and more careful in their purchases, more so than those who opt for the zingy, blingy Chrysler 300C. And it shows in the details: the Five Hundred is, from its large mirrors to its high driving position to its calm styling, quite clearly catering to a sedate crowd. And yet dynamically it's an interesting, even enjoyable car, and worthy of consideration even if you're more accustomed to pheromone-dripping sheetmetal with all the implied performance of a tab of Levitra. In nearly every way, the hardware used on Ford's Freestyle crossover is carried over - and in terms of power and braking capability, they're taxed less in a vehicle that's some 300 pounds lighter. The ride quality is composed and suspension noise is minimal, and the Five Hundred dismisses big road bumps in an offhand, casual way. The bottom line will appeal to every budget-conscious shopper looking for mega-room, without the mega-vroom. Priced from $22,795 in front-drive form or $24,495 for the all-wheel-drive model, the Five Hundred can be had in three trim levels. The SE comes with power windows, a six-way power driver's seat, and cruise control, as well as the continuously variable transmission; the SEL adds a six-speed automatic on front-drive cars, woodgrain dash trim, a six-CD in-dash changer, a power passenger seat and steering-wheel audio controls. The Limited tops off with an audiophile sound system, more power functions for the seats, 18-inch wheels and Pirelli tires.

Ford: Ford Five Hundred
The all-new 2005 Ford Five Hundred reinvents the family car by marrying the body of a contemporary sedan to an all-new vehicle architecture. The unique combination results in an upscale four-door midsize sedan. It is expected to attract customers who appreciate the upright Command Seating, flexible storage space and all-wheel-drive capability of an SUV, but who want the comfort and drivability of a sedan.

Bankrate road test: Ford Five Hundred
The Five Hundred is available in two chassis configurations, front-wheel drive and full-time all-wheel drive. It comes in three trim levels. The base SE includes air-conditioning, power driver's seat and the usual power assists on the windows and door locks. The SEL adds a power passenger seat - though only powered fore and aft, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlamps and a six-disc CD changer, as well as other amenities. Like all Five Hundred models, it came with a 203-horsepower V6, the only engine offered. It was coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission, which is what the all-wheel-drive models come with. The first thing any really car-conscious buyer will notice about the Five Hundred is that it looks very much like a taller Volkswagen Passat. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's unfortunate that Ford didn't strike out in a new styling direction, as it did with the first Taurus.
