Ford Freestyle - 2005 Ford Freestyle SEL Review by autoMedia
Following terrific success of its new 2004 F-150 pickups, Ford has been telling everyone who will listen that 2005 is its "Year of the Car," and has backed that up with fall introductions of its all-new Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego sedans and a hot retro-look new Mustang. Freestyle, like Five Hundred and Montego, sits on a sophisticated Volvo-derived platform (Ford owns Volvo as part of its Premier Automotive Group) with available AWD and state-of-the-art safety technology.

Instead of a veto, try a second thought. Keep in mind this Five Hundred has the all-wheel-drive option. The electronically controlled Haldex system came over from Sweden as part of the Volvo P2 platform that underlies this new Ford. The design theme of the interior seems to have been grabbed directly from the F-150 pickup. No brocade. No filigree. Instead of the fine, fussy details Detroit reached for back in the Iacocca era to lay on the simulated luxury, the Five Hundred has bold shapes that look weighty. The warm caramel and camel hues of the vinyl and leather are punctuated with frosty aluminum. The instrument bezels look like they weigh a pound apiece. A night of snow and sleet made a mess of local roads, but the Ford Five Hundred's all-wheel-drive system made the trip to the office a little less stressful. The exterior of the Five Hundred isn't very exciting to look at, but neither are those of the Accords, Camrys, and LaCrosses of the world. Inside, the Five Hundred is roomy, and it looks and feels terrific. Ford has come a long way in its interior styling. The same can't be said of the Five Hundred's engine.

But interestingly enough each car took a similar root in development. The Chrysler, and its Dodge Magnum wagon and upcoming Charger sedan LX siblings, is the direct result of Chrysler Groups marriage with then Daimler-Benz, a company now called DaimlerChrysler. Much of the cars general architecture, including its suspension components, steering rack and 5-speed transmission, are sourced from the very competent Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Likewise, the Five Hundred team took advantage of its relationship with Swedens Volvo, a sibling nameplate thats also part of the Ford Motor Company umbrella through its Premier Auto Group (PAG) parent.

The trunk is deep, long and wide. Ford says the trunk, with 21 cubic feet of space, can accommodate eight full-size golf bags. When was the last time you heard of a midsize sedan, such as the Accord or Camry, being able to caddy eight golf bags? With an exterior length of 200 inches - nearly one foot longer than the Accord and Camry - classifying the Five Hundred as a midsize vehicle is a bit of a stretch. Ford boasts that interior flexibility is one of the chief attributes of the Five Hundred. The rear seat folds flat, as does the front passenger seat, allowing for remarkable cargo transporting capabilities. Another unique interior characteristic to the Five Hundred is its SUV-like seating features. Ford calls it the Command Seating design, which allows passengers to sit 4 inches higher than in other conventional midsize sedans. Yet, there is no step-up required.

You wouldnt be missing the mark to consider the Five Hundred when shopping for a family sedan. Visit the Toyota, Honda and Nissan stores. But give the Five Hundred a spin, too. It will not be a waste of your time. Perhaps the word is already out. Or maybe its the steady bombardment of TV ads. Maybe the one thing that people who enjoy researching their next car purchase need to know is that the Five Hundred is based on the respected Volvo S60 and S80 platform. This gives the Five Hundred some great traits including Volvos safety technology, its all-wheel drive system, an excellent ride quality and responsive handling. Its in the interior that the Five Hundred shines. It might be the most spacious car for its exterior size in the world. Its 200-inch length puts it in the same class as the Buick LeSabre, the new Buick LaCrosse, the Pontiac Bonneville and the Chevrolet Impala. But the Five Hundred blows away those cars with stretch-out room in front AND stretch-out room in back. Its a spectacular use of available space.
