The 2005 Ford Five Hundred and its wagon variant, the Freestyle, are based on Ford subsidiary Volvo's S80 platform and share that vehicle's optional all-wheel drive, making it the most affordable car in its class to offer the feature. The Five Hundred measures a foot shorter from bumper to bumper than the Ford Crown Victoria, but the Five Hundred is markedly roomier inside. Ford representatives occasionally refer to the Five Hundred as a midsize car, but its abundant cabin and trunk volumes slot it well into the EPA's full-size category. The Five Hundred comes in three trim levels: SE, SEL and Limited. All feature chrome surrounding the side windows, recalling European sedans. The door handles are body colored, and chrome adorns the front and rear lower fascias of SEL and Limited models, which also get front fog lights.

Ford is giving itself a year to figure out if the Five Hundred can morph into an all-wheel-drive cruising machine powered by a V8, but, like any good company, they're also keeping their options open. They apparently have a few alternatives, not all of which have been revealed, although plugging along on the same dated (think late 70s, people) Town Car chassis is also a possibility. The redesigned Town Car and Lincoln LS successors will probably be developed on the same platform underpinning the Five Hundred, Ford Freestyle and Mercury Montego, although no one knows when any of this so-called "development" will occur.
