Ford first used the Five Hundred designation in numerical form on the highest trim version of its 1957 Fairlane model and the car helped Ford overtake Click for a larger 2005 Ford Five Hundred picture Chevrolet in the sales race. When Ford launched a new flagship, the Galaxie, in 1959, it again used the "500" badge to indicate the most upscale version. The Five Hundred's face has large, jewel-styled and multi-bulb triangular headlight elements on either side of a wide, trapezoidal grille. Chrome accents the front edges of the bumper. There are similar chrome accents on the rear bumper and another that bisects the doors and provides a visual bridge between slightly flared wheel arches. Chrome also frames the side windows, which include large third windows that give the Five Hundred more of a luxury car profile. The tall trunk lid has a spoiler-like lip along its top trailing edge.

The 2005 Ford Five Hundred is compelling enough to bring sedan buyers back into the Ford fold, offering class-leading interior space, a giant trunk, an available all-wheel-drive system, and impressive safety systems. Without AWD, the 2005 Ford Five Hundred is a front-wheel-drive sedan with a six-speed automatic transmission. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is included with the optional AWD, a Volvo design employing a Haldex limited-slip coupling to transfer engine torque rearward when the front wheels slip. Other Volvo influences include structural crush zones and side-impact protection that is based on the Swedish automaker's Side Impact Protection Technology (SIPS). Other safety items on the 2005 Ford Five Hundred include available side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags with rollover protection, a reverse sensing system and power adjustable pedals. Traction control is standard, but stability control is not available at any price. Every Ford Five Hundred rides on a four-wheel independent suspension and is equipped with four-wheel-disc ABS brakes.

The Five Hundred and Montego are the first Ford products to take advantage of the company's controlling stake in Volvo. They're built on the same platform Volvo uses for its S60 and S80 sedans, V70 and XC70 wagons and XC90 SUV, and make extensive use of Volvo safety and all-wheel-drive technology. On the outside, the new Ford and Mercury are about the same size as a Chrysler 300. Their sheet metal is modern but unremarkable in appearance and, for better or worse, heavily derivative of the Volkswagen Passat's. On the inside, these cars offer just as much legroom as the spacious 300 but aren't quite as accommodating for hips and shoulders. If sitting up high is important to you, then you'll like the view from the driver seat. Ford calls the Five Hundred "a sedan derived from a crossover vehicle," and to that end the seating position is elevated (it's like sitting in a Subaru Outback); the car's beltline is relatively low and the side mirrors are large. Scrutinize the cabin and it's apparent that designers put a lot of thought into creating an attractive and functional environment. In lieu of the shapeless dash and seats found in the Taurus and Sable, the Five Hundred and Montego have the crisp, clean lines popularized by the Passat. The Montego even gets the two-tone color scheme typical of most European-designed cockpits. The metallic-ringed gauges are contemporary in appearance and easy to read; the gauge packs in top-of-the-line Five Hundreds have cream faces while all Montego dials have gray backgrounds.
