AMR Review: 2005 Ford Five Hundred - Value-Priced Audi A6
Ford Five Hundred What you are looking at is the end of an era. The Ford Taurus essentially saved the car side of FoMoCo in the 80s with revolutionary design and packaging. Whether you like it or not, you have to credit the car with selling tremendously well, and really being a step above the quality and content of its various GM rivals. Until the Chrysler LH vehicles bowed in the early 90s, there really was no solid American competition for the Taurus. The car has seen non-fleet sales dwindle as it grew excessively long in the tooth, yet was receiving almost annual updates of one kind or another to the lights, dash, packaging and pricing. L engine putting out barely over 200 horses isn't good enough anymore. The Duratec is a fine engine, but it's being laden with an AWD system, making the power a bit deficient. When Honda has a 240 hp V6 of the same displacement in the Accord, and Nissan packs similar power with more displacement in the Altima, the Five Hundred has trouble being considered nimble.

2006 Ford Five Hundred Car Review - Edmunds.com
With the thoroughly mediocre Taurus out of the spotlight, Ford is now waging a two-pronged attack on the import-brand leaders: For buyers seeking athleticism, there's the midsize Fusion. For buyers seeking maximum comfort, space and value, there's the full-size Ford Five Hundred. Based on a platform shared with Volvo's S80, the Five Hundred makes extensive use of Volvo safety and all-wheel-drive technology. This roomy Ford car offers an airy cabin with eight cupholders, a full menu of airbags and one of the world's largest trunks (21 cubic feet). The Ford Five Hundred sedan is available in one of three trims: SE, SEL and Limited. The SE starts you out with 17-inch wheels, a six-way power driver seat, full power accessories, air conditioning, a CD player and cruise control. The SEL adds an eight-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, wood interior trim, an MP3-compatible in-dash CD changer, a fold-flat front-passenger seat and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Step up to the Limited and you'll get 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, a four-way power passenger seat, seat memory, an upgraded audio system, heated seats and an analog clock. All Five Hundred models come with a full set of disc brakes, ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Optional on all models are side-impact airbags that protect front occupants' torsos and side curtain airbags that protect the heads of outboard front and rear occupants. Traction control is standard, but stability control is not available. Front- and side-impact testing by the NHTSA returned a perfect five-star rating across the board.

Introduced as an all-new nameplate for 2005, the Ford Five Hundred is the company's interpretation of the modern American sedan. Big and roomy inside, the Five Hundred features a tall roof that offers lots of headroom. The driver sits relatively high, gaining a commanding view of the road. The back seats are comfortable and quite roomy. While many automakers still use four-speed automatic transmissions, front-wheel-drive versions of the Five Hundred benefit from a six-speed automatic, which provides smoother performance and better fuel efficiency.

In fact, the Five Hundred is so good that one has to wonder why the Crown Victoria hasnt been extended its final place in history. Based on the excellent Volvo S80 platform, the Five Hundred is as European as the Crown Victoria is American. Styling is understated in the Audi idiom; it is a good looking car that, in contrast to the bold Chrysler 300 with which it competes, will fade into the background. Take a crossover wagon, chop off the rear, enlist the expertise of Volvo, and load it up with features customers desire. It sounds like a powerful combination, and it is. The Ford Five Hundred is one of the best new sedans to come out of Detroit in decades. While not underpowered, the car could use a few more ponies under the hood. Kick them off at the same time as an upcoming styling revision for more visual punch, and Ford will have a real hit.

The Five Hundred is not just a traditional sedan; it's also a traditional Ford. It's thoroughly planned, well engineered, and carefully produced, the product of a company that always has had a special feel for manufacturing. But it's a product, not a car. For car guys, the Ford Five Hundred might be the kind of car you can recommend, an automobile that you can picture someone else driving. But if you're looking for a Ford sedan that you'd want to drive yourself, then you'll be looking forward to the 2005 Detroit auto show.
Ford Five Hundred Car Review - MotorPoint
You sit quite high in the Five Hundred with first-class visibility all around. The night lighting is superior, even the puddle lights mounted under the outside mirrors were outstanding. When you opened the doors the interior lights flooded the car. Very reassuring, and the headlights were also well above average. A word about those doors; they are big and heavy so be warned when parking on hills that they can promote some unkind words. However, it is reassuring to have such a solid structure protecting you from side impacts.

The V6 engine that comes on all models delivers responsive performance and good fuel economy. On front-wheel-drive models, the V6 is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, which offers more responsive performance and better efficiency than a traditional four-speed automatic. All-wheel-drive models come with a continuously variable transmission, a design noted for its responsiveness and efficiency. The 2006 Ford Five Hundred is available in three trim levels: SE, SEL, and Limited. Each is available with all-wheel drive.

For good or ill, the 2005 Ford Five Hundred is it - at least until the 2006 Ford Fusion arrives next year. Whether it makes the grade will be, of course, up to how many of you plunk down hard-earned cash on it, and, ultimately, how many come back for more. Mission accomplished. Consider the Ford Five Hundred's trunk: it's bigger than the Crown Vic's, though the car itself is shorter. And the SUV-style driving position, which Ford refers to as "command" seating, provides an excellent, upright view of the road. In the back, shoulder room is plentiful and there's more than enough legroom. As far as control layout, the 2005 Ford Five Hundred has all its fingers and toes, turn signals and knobs - and they are where they should be. If only they had put a more powerful engine in the thing. Then it would truly be a vehicle destined for success. As it is, the 2005 Ford Five Hundred suffers from a lack of power that some will find hard to overlook.
