Ford - Ford's all-new Five Hundred brings the family sedan to new heights. Sharing its Volvo-based platform with Ford's Freestyle crossover gives the Five Hundred "tall in the saddle" seating. It comes with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and can be fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, curtain airbags and heated leather seats. The all-new limited production GT puts out 550 horses and 500 pound-feet of torque. The cockpit is fitted with leather-trimmed carbon-fiber seats, retro-style toggle switches, air-conditioning, power windows and a CD player. The completely new 2005 Mustang style evokes the 1967-1970 series with a classic horizontal grille, three-bar taillights and fastback profile. Drivers can change the colors on the new instrument cluster to match their mood. Mercury - All new for 2005 the Montego sedan, a cousin of the Ford Five Hundred, joins Mercury's lineup. Packaging a large-car interior into a midsize body, the tall-roof Montego has a raised seating position and extra-large trunk. The Grand Marquis and Sable remain unchanged for 2005. With the new 2005 Mariner, Mercury joins the burgeoning compact SUV class. Essentially an upmarket Ford Escape, the Mariner receives Mercury-influenced styling cues inside and out.

The secret? All-wheel drive. The Five Hundred and Ford Freestyle crossover underscore another trend on the passenger car side of the market. They're available with optional all-wheel-drive, a must-have feature for practitioners who can't afford to stay home when rough weather or conditions hit. Cadillac's new STS sedan is targeted to compete with high-end imports, with rear-wheel drive.

In the midsize car market, it's Ford vs. Chevy vs. Toyota vs. Honda vs. Nissan. The entry-level midsize car, along with the larger Five Hundred sedan, represents Ford's latest effort to rebuild passenger car sales. Styling and price are more likely to lure buyers. Ford Taurus in 2005, Fusion in 2006: Ford is expected to continue racing the Taurus in NASCAR for 2005, though that car will be relegated largely to fleets, as the 2005 Ford Five Hundred sedan becomes the company's focus for the passenger-car market. Ford will not race the Five Hundred, but is expected to race the 2006 Ford Fusion, a Taurus-sized sedan based on the Mazda6 platform. That car was originally called the Ford Futura, but Pep Boys, the parts supplier, used the Futura name for its line of tires, and Ford and Pep Boys could not come to an agreement, even though the Futura name was used by Ford for a Falcon model.

The Impala's interior, even in the cloth-upholstered LS and LT models, looks pretty classy. Compared to the blandness of the Ford Five Hundred's cabin and the Chrysler 300's stiff-as-a-board seats, the Impala is downright luxurious.

The closest non-Chrysler competitor is probably Ford's Five Hundred. Though front-wheel-drive and down fifty horsepower, the Five Hundred offers a similarly roomy interior (a bit roomier even) at a slightly lower price. The Ford is about as quick despite the horsepower deficit because it uses a six-speed automatic with steep ratios in the first few gears. The Charger is SE form is far from exciting to drive. Consider it a modern interpretation of the traditional American large car and you won't be far off. The Ford Five Hundred is more similar than the cars' dissimilar appearances suggest.

As noted earlier, Ford's answer to the need for increased aerodynamics on NASCAR's super speedways was answered by the Torino Talladega and the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II. Since Ford had to play by the same rules as Chrysler, it too was required to build five hundred each of the Talladega and Spoiler II for the street.
