Making the Focus better was always going to be a hard task for Ford, such were the manifest talents of the original. Fortunately, in most of the areas where it had to improve, the Mark 2 is far better. Interior quality has been dramatically improved and the cabin is spacious, decently trimmed and feels durable - at least in the front; rear seat passengers have to deal with some very fragile-feeling trim.

An imaginative design that was also very practical, the year 2000 Ford Focus was a trend-setting small car - for a new millennium. Its taller-than-average body has raised seating that takes advantage of new-found inner space. Focus was the most successful new Ford vehicle launch in years. By the end of January 2000, more than 11,300 Canadians had already driven away in a brand new Focus. A base Focus LX 4-door sedan sold for $14,995. Now for the bad news, product quality, especially in the first and second (to a lesser extent) years was poor. Focus was recalled for nine separate safety defects (see attached list) in the first year alone. It's sad, because Focus is actually a well-designed and well-engineered car.

It's the steering that really makes the point. Without dismissing the many other pieces of the jigsaw (and leaving aside, for the moment, the cosmetic cues), it's what most vociferously defines how Ford's new Focus RS feels on the road. Specifically, it communicates in some detail what's happening between tyres and tarmac; more broadly, it communicates exactly what kind of car the Focus RS is. Equally important, the Focus RS is a car with a significant heritage. RS stands for Rallye Sport, and in Ford's vocabulary it headlines more than 30 years of its hottest production cars, from the original RS1600 Escort in 1970 to the last high-winged Escort RS Cosworth and RS2000 4x4 of the 1990s, via the most sporting versions of the Capri, Sierra and Fiesta. Ford is as selective in using the Cosworth badge as it is the RS one, and the Focus RS simply didn't have Cosworth input. More power and more complex technology would have taken the Focus way outside the acceptable RS price bracket. And, crucially, it would have had a completely different profile.
