The transition from the outgoing rally car to the new model, which had to be designed with radical regulation changes for 2006 in mind, required a clean sheet of paper from the start. The previous model was highly successful in its own right, but the team worked to a brief that demanded improvements in key areas such as engine, transmission and suspension.

The BP-Ford World Rally Team has signed Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen to drive the all-new Focus RS World Rally Car in the FIA World Rally Championship. A three-year agreement will see the Finns joining fellow countrymen Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen in the BP-Ford World Rally Team from 2006.

Five-spoke, one-piece wheels are included with both cars. The Mercedes and Corvette models get sticks, while the Peugeot and Focus rally cars get lugged treads. Foam inserts aren't supplied, and the tires are not glued, but their firm-compound rubber is stiff enough to go without inserts.

M-Sport started work on building the first shell for the all-new 2006 Focus RS World Rally Car last week. Technical director Christian Loriaux expects it to be completed by the end of August. The concept design plans for the car were completed last month and 10 sets of roll cage tubes have also been manufactured.
