A supercharger enables the Ford Focus C-MAX H2 ICE to have similar performance to the corresponding gasoline engine. By compressing the intake air, the supercharger increases the mass of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. During compression the air is heated and it is then cooled by the two intercoolers, of which one is located behind the front bumper and the other in the middle of the engine compartment.

The next step will be to test the gasoline engine in a hybrid configuration that has been optimized for the hydrogen engine. The optimization of the hybrid powertrain for the hydrogen-fueled Ford Focus engine has already been done using the CTR's Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit (PSAT) software.
Turbo & High-Tech Performance
Turbo pressurization has become a realization for Ford Focus pilots, thanks to Alamo Autosports. The turbo kit employs a Garrett T3 turbo with Alamo-spec compressor and turbine wheels. The base kit relies a Haltech AIC, which commands a single 550cc secondary injector along with upgrades to the stock ECU. For those that want more power, a Haltech E6K stand-alone engine management system can be used. During torture testing, which consisted of extended WOT operation at 9 psi, Alamo found rods were a potential weak link as all four broke at once. Alamo used this mishap to develop its line of FocusParts rods and pistons.
