The Five Hundred boasts a body structure and safety technology developed by Volvo and first used on Volvo's S80 luxury sedan and then for its highly acclaimed XC90 sport utility vehicle. Ford acquired the Swedish automaker famous for its passenger-protecting innovations in 1999. When it came time to develop the Five Hundred (and its upscale cousin, the Mercury Montego), Ford imported Volvo's best structural and safety engineers to work on the project. Ford first used the Five Hundred designation in numerical form on the highest trim version of its 1957 Fairlane model and the car helped Ford overtake Chevrolet in the sales race. When Ford launched a new flagship, the Galaxie, in 1959, it again used the "500" badge to indicate the most upscale version.

In 1997 Ford went outside the company to hire J Mays as its new chief designer. Earlier Mays had been chief designer at Audi, and Ford hoped he'd work similar magic in Dearborn. Well, the magic has been a long time coming. Mays' concepts ranged from retro to futuristic. His most notable product to date has been the retro Ford Thunderbird, which left the gate strong but soon flagged. Inside the situation is much the same: VW in its rectilinearity, but without the upscale ambiance present in a Passat. As in other recent Ford interiors, the materials are of good quality-the IP and doors are soft to the touch-but don't look it. How did they manage this?

The Ford Five Hundred has no real clear competitors right now. If you're looking for a large, safe, comfortable sedan, with available all-wheel drive, for less than 30 grand, you'd be hard pressed to come up with one. The Subaru Legacy is much smaller. The Audi A4 is much smaller and more expensive. The Toyota Avalon doesn't offer all-wheel drive. The Chrysler 300 doesn't have nearly the interior room.
