Ford Contour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ford Contour was a car produced for the North American market between 1995 and 2000; it fit between the subcompact Ford Escort and the large Ford Taurus. It was essentially a slightly modified version of the European Ford Mondeo but did not match its sales success. Many people believe the reason why the Contour and Mystique, which were seen by most buyers as a replacement for the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz, failed was because the cars' size was too close to the Ford Escort but its price was too close to the midsize Ford Taurus, several thousand dollars higher than the old models. The Contour (particularly later models) had problems with the plastic lens on the headlight assemblies. In some instances, the clear lens of the headlight assembly would develop micro-cracks and would fog and opaque over time. The end result would be diminished headlight brightness, requiring replacement of the assembly.

Then there's also the crowd that doesn't want to be seen in a BMW. There are people who like the anonymity of driving a Ford Contour that's secretly a performance car under the skin. And, more importantly, they won't have everyone automatically assuming they're a yuppie scumball stockbroker.

Popular Mechanics - Ford Contour
The V6 engine is available on Contour SE models, which also brings firmer shock settings, wider tires and 4-wheel disc brakes. Other models have drums in the rear. Regardless of the model, antilock brakes with traction control are optional. Also on the options list is a 4-speed automatic. In fact, if you're the kind of person who wants a sporty, European-flavored sedan, but whose disposable income prevents you from getting past the front door of the local BMW dealership, the Contour may be just what you want. It's one of the few 4-door cars around-at any price-that lets you shift gears totally for yourself. And when you opt to do that while spinning those gears via the V6 engine, the fun meter is pegged. However, regardless of the enjoyment you may have from the driver's seat of a properly equipped Contour, you probably won't receive the same kind of pleasure while sitting in the back. Despite Ford's various attempts at squeezing a couple more inches of rear-passenger space into the package, there's no denying that the Contour feels small inside. That's because the Contour is small inside. Two full-size adults in front are apt to brush shoulders, and on long drives they may fight for some elbowroom.

2000 Ford Contour
The Contour looks like a Ford with its classic jellybean styling. The organic styling of the Ford Contour is attractive. The smooth, rounded lines meld into an elegant shape that is pleasing to the eye. It's also an aerodynamic shape that contributes to lower fuel economy and reduced wind noise. It looks a bit dated at this point, however, having been introduced more than four years ago. SVT Contour features perforated leather on all seating surfaces available in Midnight Blue or Prairie Tan. It comes with a great leather-wrapped steering wheel along with a leather-covered shifter boot and shift knob. A specially designed driver's seat features 10-way power adjustment, including power lumbar. The front seat's lateral bolstering is accentuated on both the seat cushion and the seatback. Contour comes standard with 15-inch wheels and tires. Ride and handling were improved in 1999 with revisions to the front subframe and A-arm design, resulting in reduced friction and improved steering precision. It dampens vibration on rough, urban roads, yet maintains a spirited character when you slip out to the countryside. The Contour seems eager to challenge the highway. Body roll is subdued, steering is responsive and predictable.
