CAP Online: History of the Ford Escort
Initially considered too conventional and unadvanced for production in Germany, Ford of Europe management persisted and dual production was set up. The car quickly topped the sales and production charts (2,155,301 built between 1968 and 1975; 18M to date) - its proven formula was a hit. When the Escort was launched, Ford prepared a rallying version, which was later marketed as the Escort Mexico, commemorating the car's victory in the London to Mexico Rally of 1970. A 1600 cc engine in a car whose standard model came with an 1100 was astonishing, and the car caught the youth market's imagination. Thus was born the Escort's reputation as the Essex lad's car, with the RS 2000 model following in 1974. The car was revolutionary in terms of style: a squared-off modern hatchback with an attractive rear bustle developed in association with Ford's Japanese partners, Mazda. Gone were the RS 2000 and Mexico, but there was an XR3 model for Europe (later replaced by the more acceptable XR3i, with fuel injection). This began another trend, forcing Ford's Advanced Vehicles Operations to develop XR versions of other Ford models. XRs became de rigueur for 1980s boy racers - and joyriders.

The Escort was designed as everyday transport, and it does that just fine with its lack of any real technological advances that will cause problems. It was put into production after the successful Mk1 Escort and was little more than a facelift really. It did take the Escort name further both on the road and race tracks off the world of course. Engine choice was quite simple. Just your basic four cylinder in the usual sizes of 1100 gutless and frugal, up to 1300 and 1600 average but fun sizes, then if youre lucky to find one, a 2000cc barrel of laughs. Naturally its all rear wheel power no matter which Mk2 you own. A four speed manual is standard but it is not too hard to have a Ford Sierra 5-speed put in for minimal amounts of work. Bigger engines, twin cam and Cosworth heads are popular, not to mention turbo charged versions. Whether you buy one or start your own the Escort is a well-documented and very successful rally car. There are loads of mechanics and ex-racers who can help sort out a package for you and give you all the information youll need. Some people seem to think you need a turbo charged, four wheel drive to be competitive.

Although it has been known and has been very successful around Europe since 1961, the Ford Escort that North America knew was only introduced in 1981. This Ford Escort was basically inspired by the success of the European model. The Ford Escort was introduced by Ford in the United States in 1981. It shared its parts with the European Ford Escort Mk 3 although its design and styling is significantly different. Upon introduction, the car was available in two body styles: a 3-door hatchback and a 4-door wagon. It was also available in five trims: base, L, GL, GLX and SS trims. Although its engine gives it a meager performance, many Ford Escort buyers were satisfied with it, considering that most of them must have bought one because of the practicality its body style has to offer rather than its power.

Inside Line: Ford Escort/Mercury Tracer -
Though Ford used hemispherical combustion chambers and an aluminum head and intake manifold, the engine managed only 65 horsepower and early production engines were not known for their longevity. In spite of huge development costs, the early Escorts had a number of recalls and build-quality problems that made constant refinements mandatory. A four-speed manual transmission was standard, and a power-sapping three-speed automatic was optional. Ford simplified the Escort lineup for 1987, which now consisted of Pony, GL and GT models. Carburetors were history, as all Escorts now had fuel injection. Horsepower numbers were up slightly: The Pony and GL had 90 horsepower, and the GT had 110 eager horses. The diesel engine option was dropped partway through this year, due to sales activity as sluggish as its acceleration. To hold on to its best-selling status and better equip its popular small car for battle against the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, Ford completely redesigned the Escort for 1991. New sheetmetal with semi-flush glass presented a sleeker appearance, and GT models once again had an asymmetrical grille along with a more aggressive front airdam and rocker panel styling treatment. A lower beltline and increased glass area afforded a more airy cabin with better visibility. The new interior featured a restyled dash, full console, rear-seat heater ducts and a passenger-side visor mirror.
