Copyright protected When Ford Motor Company introduced its new Model T on October 1, 1908, even an inveterate optimist like Henry Ford (1863-1947) could not predict the vast changes that his rather homely new vehicle would produce. What flowed from this series of bold innovations was more than an endless stream of Model Ts - it was the very foundation of the twentieth century itself. The assembly line became the century's characteristic production mode, eventually applied to everything from phonographs to hamburgers. High-wage, low-skilled factory jobs accelerated both immigration from overseas and the movement of Americans from the farms to the cities and into an ever-expanding middle class. The creation of huge numbers of low-skilled workers also gave rise in the 1930s to industrial unionism as a potent social and political force. Higher wages allowed workers to buy the very goods they produced, including cars. "Today's MP3-players like the Apple iPod, with up to 60 gigabytes of storage, allow you to create your own library of music with play lists comparable to more than 500 conventional CDs," said Christof Kellerwessel, Ford of Europe's Chief Engineer for Electrical Systems. Ford Mondeo, Ford Focus and Ford C-MAX have had optional Bluetooth © and voice control systems based on Nokia technology since May 2005 in combination with various Ford audio systems. The new versions of the Ford Fiesta and Ford Fusion have also adopted this technology and they are the first models in their segment to offer this premium technology. For its existing model lines, Ford offers three optional Bluetooth © package variants providing varying levels of operational comfort. They all offer hands-free mobile phone operation and include a factory-mounted digital signal processing microphone specifically designed to optimise voice control. The audio system's onboard speakers are used to achieve the best possible sound quality for all applications. Unlike aftermarket kits, the Ford solution is fully integrated into the vehicle's existing electrical control systems, which allows full use of the familiar remote radio controls.

Like Honda's Element, the Model U offers a reconfigurable interior with little clutter and lots of possibilities. However, the Model U presents a reconfigurable exterior, too. The roof is power-retractable and the rear of the vehicle can be opened as well. The rear window retracts into the deck lid which can then be folded into the floor. Unlike the Element, or any other car, is the Model U's environmentally friendly nature. It's doubtful the Model U will ever make it to a showroom floor, but the technologies used in its development will surely find their way into future Ford cars and trucks. Ford is certainly putting its money where its collective mouth is with regard to building environmentally friendly vehicles.

Ford's massive plants in suburban Detroitthe Highland Park and River Rouge facilitiesbegan to mass produce cars on moving assembly lines in the 1910s. The Henry Ford Motor Company helped transform the nascent auto industry by changing the ways cars were built. In the early years of American automobile production, hundreds of companys made small numbers of cars. Prices were high, and the volume of cars produced by each company was small. When the Henry Ford Motor Company began using a moving assembly line in parts of the Highland Park factory in 1913, the company started to streamline the production process, and helped make the auto industry into a mass production industrial behemoth. The prices of automobiles fell dramatically, making them more affordable. In 1900, there were about 8,000 cars in the United States.
