Ford took some time at its Jan. 5 evening press conference during the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to review and reminisce about its accomplishments in the previous century before presenting the Mustang GT concept. The headlight configuration and grille shape of the Mustang GT concept mimics the originals, with round headlamps and the forward-swept orientation of the grille. Mustangs have long had side scoops, and the Mustang GT concept continues that tradition, too. The Mustang GT coupe also incorporates fastback styling - a Mustang trademark from its early days.

The starting point is an all-new, purpose-built, muscle-car platform with exceptional body stiffness and a very high strength-to-weight ratio. With this ultra-rigid structure, Mustang engineers could tune spring, damping and bushing rates to a finer degree than ever possible. Using computer-aided design and engineering technology, the Mustang team took months off the earliest phases of component development. A firm bushing is positioned at the point where the shorter forward leg of the L-arm connects to the chassis to control side-to-side motion and quicken steering response. The fore-and-aft movements are directed through a softer, compliant bushing at the longer, rear L-arm leg, which damps road shocks.

The Ford Mustang is a popular sports car. It was originally based on the Ford Falcon. It may be slow and not very great on the track but for its low price its a good buy. The first production Ford Mustang, a white convertible with black interior, rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on March 9, 1964. It was later introduced to the North American public at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964 and via all three American television networks on April 19 that year by the Ford Motor Company. It was the most successful product launch in automotive history, setting off near-pandemonium at Ford dealers across the continent. The DC generator was replaced by a new AC alternator on all Fords and the now-famous Mustang GT was introduced, available with either four-barrel engine and any body style. Additionally, back-up lights were added to the car in 1965. Originally, the Mustang was available as either a hardtop or convertible. At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford introduced a redesigned Mustang for the 2005 model year The chief engineer for the 2005 Ford Mustang was Hau Thai-Tang, an Asian American of Vietnamese descent. It is a testament to the fact that Asian Americans have kept American exports competitive in the world. Many feel that Tang's accomplishments have singlehandedly saved thousands of American jobs, and feel that this is a trend that must be capitalized on. Drawing inspiration from 1960s Mustangs, the car featured an aesthetic which Senior Vice President of Design, J Mays referred to as "retro-futurism".

Vortech. Mustang. The two go together like peanut butter and jelly, so it should be to no one's surprise that the latest pairing of centrifugal supercharging and ponycar performs well. For those Mustang GT owners who feel threatened by LS1 F-bodies and modified SRT-4s, Vortech's new $4000 kit provides an additional 125 HP of tire-smoking fun and mid-twelves in the quarter mile. The optional intercooler seems like a must-have, not really for more power (a claimed 50 extra) but rather for increased durability with the stock bottom end (detonation is not your friend). While a Mustang modified in such a manner is unlikely to keep up with the upcoming Shelby Cobra GT500, it has the distinct advantage of being available right now.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be. Once upon a time, enthusiasts would worship older cars knowing that the machines were less reliable than a Burmese train, guzzled gas, handled like pigs and had dozens of hard edges just waiting to jump out and kill you. When mainstream manufacturers began reaching back into the past to find inspiration for their current products, they screwed-up the whole deal. Cars like the Ford Mustang GT look old, but they drive new.
