Ford Recall and Defect Information - Crashworthiness
In 2000 Ford was under heavy investigation due to the auto defect ignition part that was used for well over a decade. This fact led congressional investigators wondering if Ford is part of a massive cover-up. Ford recalled 2002 Ford Truck Rangers, which affects a potential 1,096 units. Manufactured from May 2001 to January 2002, the manual transmission trucks equipped with the FX4 package has a rear axle differential case that could fracture under a high torque event. This could happen if a driver accelerates rapidly from a stop or when a spinning tire suddenly gains traction. In response to the Ford recall problem dealers will replace the rear axle assembly. An awareness letter was to be sent around February 11, 2002 to the owners advising that a dealer can inspect the rear differential prior to parts availability if the customer wishes. A follow up letter will be sent in April when parts are available asking owners to return the vehicles to dealers to have the rear axle assembly replaced. The owner notification is expected to begin February-March 2002.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on its website that the windshield wiper motor in question may have been made without grease being applied to the shaft gear, causing the gear to crack and resulting in the wiper not working. A malfunctioning windshield wiper could cause an accident in adverse weather conditions, the NHTSA said.
Ford recalls Explorers, Mountaineers
Dec. 11, 2000 - Ford Motor will recall 110,633 Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers to fix a device that limits the top speed of the vehicles - a problem that was uncovered by tests run in response to the Firestone tire recall. Dec. 8, 2000 - Subaru of America announced Friday the voluntary recall of certain 2001 Subaru Legacy vehicles. The recall involves the inspection of fuel hoses, right front wheel bearing and rear center seat belt housings on some models, including Legacy L, GT and Outback. The company said layers on the fuel hose may separate, causing it to leak. The hose recall affects 1,456 vehicles. Subaru will also check 1,977 cars for a casting flaw in the right front bearing housing that could lead to loss of vehicle control. Dec. 1, 2000 - Ford Motor is recalling 876,413 Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers to replace faulty parts on the suspension system. The company is recalling 1995 through 1997 models of the Explorer and the 1997 Mountaineer because links that attach the front stabilizer bar to the SUVs can fail. The stabilizer bar helps control the pitch of the vehicle in turns. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials say the sway bar problem did not cause tread separations on Firestone tires that were used on the Explorer.
