April 19, 2002 - The Ford SVT Focus Competition concept was introduced today at the Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) International Auto Salon, by Tom Scarpello, sales and marketing manager for the Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT). "The SVT Focus will be very competitive right out of the box in many forms of racing, and in particular at autocross events," said Scarpello. "But there are always steps that can be taken to be even more competitive. The Competition concept was put together by several SVT employees that have racing experience. The SVT Focus Competition concept The transformation begins with lowering the weight of the car to improve the power-to-weight ratio. The removal of sound absorption materials, the radio, air conditioning system, and backseat save close to 150 pounds. Other weight saving measures include the replacement of the hood with a carbon fiber piece and the use of lightweight racing seats and wheels.

"SVT led the modern-day factory performance trend with the Mustang Cobra and the industry's first high-performance truck, the F-150 Lightning," says Hau Thai-Tang, director, Ford Advanced Product Creation and SVT. This rear suspension design has been validated on the track by Ford Racing. The race-prepared Ford Racing Mustang FR500C was purpose-built from the base 2005 Mustang body structure and suspension geometry to run in the Grand-Am Cup series, a class of road racing for production-based cars. To match this power and handling ability, SVT fitted some of the biggest brakes in the business to the GT500. Fourteen-inch cross-drilled Brembo rotors up front and 13-inch discs in the rear continue SVT's legacy of great-braking Mustangs.

Ford is maybe the last place you'd find the engineers thinking about extracting 20 more horsepower out of a blower-possessed multi-valve V-8 already pounding out 360 horses, but indeed, that's where the 380-hp 2001 Ford SVT Lightning comes from. Surprised? Where does the power come from? For better airflow, SVT engineers specified a larger air intake (the one cut through the inner fender) by 50 percent, and gave it a bigger hose to connect to the air box. Older Lightnings had a distinctly tough ride quality, like they'd been tuned for the racetrack, Detroit's Telegraph road, and nothing in between. This year's model gets some noticeable improvements. To accompany the front A-arms and rear leaf springs, SVT has swapped in some Bilstein shocks for better ride damping. Even with the half-inch drop in suspension height in front, and two inches in the rear, it's a step forward - but still, the Lightning won't be mistaken for a Town Car.

With its wider, chrome-lipped grille opening and bigger headlights, the Contour's new front end is almost a carbon copy of the Ford Mondeo, its European cousin. The SVT Contour sports rocker panel extensions, a modestly restyled front fascia with round fog lamps, and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels.
