With stiffened front structural rails, the 2004 Ford Freestar was designed to exceed the Windstar's already competent performance in crash tests. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Freestar, and it's corporate twin the 2004 Mercury Monterey, a "Best Pick" rating for safety. The only minivan to rate better than the Freestar is the Toyota Sienna. In National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) testing, the 2004 Freestar receives five-star ratings for all crash tests except the front door side impact event, for which the Freestar scored four stars. What may not prove appealing is the fact that while dramatically improved over the Windstar it replaces, the 2004 Ford Freestar has its work cut out for it competing against the benchmark Honda Odyssey, the interesting new Nissan Quest and the outstanding new Toyota Sienna. In addition to safety and utility, Ford must provide exceptional durability and value if it expects to go toe-to-toe with the best in the class. It's true, unless you're shopping for a 2004 Ford Freestar. Then you're pretty much going to get a bland minivan with a good interior. The front seats are comfortable; command of the road is excellent, thanks to a well-thought seating position and large windows all the way around. The instrument panel and controls are nicely finished and easy to use - especially nice are the chrome rings around the gauges.
