Insur- ance Institute for Highway Safety said that just two models, the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey, received the groups best rating of Good. Models of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan with ad- justable head restraints received a rating of Ac- ceptable, while models of without the adjustable head restraints received the lowest score of Poor. Other minivans that re- ceived a Poor rating included Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, Pon- tiac Montana SV6, Saturn Relay and Toyota Sienna, while the Honda Odysseys head restraints were rated Marginal. The Institute says that Marginal and Poor ratings mean that the restraints do not protect occupants from whiplash in rear-end collisions.

Ford's plan to reinvigorate its Oakville, Ontario, plant could be official in the next few weeks, reports the Detroit Free Press. The Freep says Ford may be close to confirming an $800 million plan to turn Oakville into a flexible assembly plant like the one the company built in Dearborn to assemble the new F-150. The suburban Toronto plant now builds the slow-selling Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. Insiders suspect Ford will rush the project to completion by 2007, in time for a new range of vehicles for the plant, which employs more than 4000 workers.

Note to mom: Don't be a cheapskate, spring for the side curtain air bags. Side-impact tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found 2006 Ford Freestar and Mazda MPV minivans without side air bags pretty much blow, as far as safety goes. Both vehicles received "poor" ratings on the test, which indicates the level of damage injuries that could be sustained during crashes at intersections. When equipped with side air bags, a $695 option on the Freestar and $400 on the MPV XL, both minivans received "acceptable," the second highest rating.
